A friend is looking for a flashgun under £100 for his Olympus E-420 - obviously doesn't have to be Olympus branded, but must do TTL - does anyone know what's available?

You can get a second-hand fl-36 for that kind of money. The metz 36 will fit the bill, but isn't great. I would pay the extra £50 and get the Metz 48 AF-1 - £150 + £8.95 P&P from camera king. This also has the remote control capability from the camera.

Thanks Andy - He'd seen this but I'm not convinced - probably the usual issues with warranty, and it's going to be damn big and top heavy on the E-420. Don't think the GN is hugely important as it's only for him taking a few pics indoors of family, etc... something a bit better than the onboard flash is what he's looking for. His budget is an absolute maximum of £120...

The flash in that link is essentially a rebranded Tumax, same people that make the Jessops ones, so build-wise it should be ok, but I'd imagine someone in the Uk will do a verison.

I'd avoid those like the plague... Second-hand FL36R would be the best bet. They are quite small and compact, although the recycle time is not as good as the metz. I wouldn't worry about an FL-36 flash being second-hand - they are built very well and will last.

I have seen one used on a friend's E-510. He has terrible problems with random under/over exposure and often has to limit the x-sync speed to compensate for this variability. I would also question the ultimate build quality and longevity of the unit.

That sounds more like operator error than a problem with the flash though...

It wasn't. The flash just isn't as reliable as the Metz or the Olympus ones. A simple swap proved that pretty conclusively.
