Hi, i'm going to be taking some pics for a friend at a night club in a few weeks time. I don't currently have a flash and nor can i afford one atm. However a friend has a olympus and a cannon flash will they fit/work on my Pentax camera? :thinking:
 
If you can get away without flash I think the results would be better. Flash kills the atmosphere in many cases.

Will a Canon flash work on a Pentax. I've no idea. If it does I suspect any ETTL function will be inactive, as I doubt if the will communicate. correctly with the camera. The other concern is wrong voltages going to the wrong pins on both flash and camera. If your Pentax has a flash PC connector you could try a PC connector to Hot Shoe ( Kaiser make one) this would ensure only the trigger connections make contact.
 
If you've got enough time and you're confident with manual exposure you could get some cactus radio triggers and use it off camera.

Oooo i like the idea of using the flash off camera. (Not a huge fan of in your face shots that all look the same)

Where would i find what i require?
 
read strobist.com and try ebay for everything you need. Searching in the lighting secion on here will provide plenty of links to sellers of the stuff you'll need.
 
Just a update. Both the canon and the olympus flash worked on my camera. But only in manual mode. :)
 
please tell me you looked up the voltages before you tried! other wise you are a brave man!
 
I'd be interested to know where there is a list of flash trigger voltages. I was looking for the trigger voltage of my Leica flash a few weeks ago, and couldn't find the info anywhere, not even on the Leica site. I suspect that manufacturers keep trigger voltages close to their chest just to stop owners using dedicated flash on non dedicated cameras.
 
You're not going to believe this, but as soon as I posted my last missive, I typed 'flash trigger voltage' into google, and the first hit was an exhaustive list of trigger voltages by many makers:lol:

Obviously using the obvious 'Leica flash trigger voltage' was not the correct way to go about it!!

tip for using the flash at a club - use a longer exposure and have the flash fire right at the end of the exposure - the longer exposure captures the background lighting etc, and the flash freezes the subjects in the frame.

Definately have a practice before you do it though!

Yeah this is what i had in mind. Im really looking forward to having a go. I have shot in clubs before but never with a decent flash. :suspect::thumbs:
