I've noticed recently, that uploading my photos to my Flickr account, it seems to sharpen them a LOT compared to what they look like on my hard drive/in photoshop....

Is anyone else experiencing this? It's making them look awful, is there any way around it? Is it my fault? Am I doing something wrong?

Are you uploading them on one computer and checking it on another?

It might be the one your editing them on, your screen isn't quite right. Because as far as I know Flickr doesn't change your photos when you upload them

Nah, I just uploaded it straight from this laptop, of which I just finished editing it in Photoshop on.

It looks fine on the laptop, and in Photoshop, and now looks WAY over sharpened on Flickr. Also had the same issue with a shot I posted on here with an over sharpened comment, of which it doesn't look it on the laptop, but again, on Flickr it most certainly is.

I didn't/don't think Flickr changes anything either, but now I don't know. I may go back to photobucket and see what happens there.

Example, number 1 from Photobucket, and number 2 from Flickr.....the original, on the laptop, lands somewhere in the middle of the two :shake:

I had to stop using flickr as i was so fed up with the sharpening artefacts they added. The "medium" size has particularly aggressive sharpening.

They probably do it so that people go "wow that's SO KEWL"

I've only started using it recently, but now i'm tempted to go elsewhere, although Photobucket, which i've used for years, seems to make them softer than normal, so don't know what to use.

Well I'm happy with PBase as the file displayed is the EXACT byte for byte image that I uploaded in the first place.

Why can't photo sites just leave our photos alone?

My Flickr Pro account is up for renewal soon and I'm seriously thinking of going back to smugmug.

Sorry to state the obvious but surely you just need to unsharpened it a little in your PP, remember flickr has a large non-slr/pro (whatever you want to call it) basis and so the little tweak of sharpening is designed fir the compact camera etc to just let the viewer have a little pleasure in his/her image.

I just took a look at your PBase account, some pretty impressive photos on there, will look into it more tomorrow after some sleep, thanks.

I understand what you're saying, and it obviously crossed my mind, but then my photos saved on my hard drive would look pretty poor, and considering this is where I look at them from for my own personal pleasure, I think it would be silly to edit them poorly, so that when uploaded to Flickr, they looked "right".

I stopped using Photobucket because I was finding that the softening was happening consistently across all my images, but I can't say that I've noticed the excessive sharpening in Flickr to be a problem on original sized images.

Are you loading up full res files and then using one of Flickr's image sizes to display on here?
I tend to resize to 800 on the longest edge before loading to Flickr and TBH the original size uploads seem to be true to the original- it's only when I let Flickr re-size the image that the sharpening starts to become apparent

If you want an alternative I've also been using pix.ie which seems to retain the image quality well.

I've always highly regarded Pbase but get a free Flickr Pro account with BT internet so have gone with that instead. If I were to pay for one or the other it'd be Pbase all the way...actually I might pay somewhere else instead but it definitely wouldn't be with Flickr.

My Flickr account is perfect. My images look the same from iMac/Photoshop/Lightroom to Flikr.
