Hi all

About three weeks ago I started posting on Flickr and received quite a lot of views, comments and faves etc.. and must admit it is a bit addictive...But is Flickr actually serving any useful purpose or is it just an ego massaging service for would be toggers? ........ Love to know what you think!

Steve

It's a useful web-hosting service unless you want your back slapped hundreds of times in which case you post in several groups and members will comment saying your pics are 'gorgeous' or fantastic'.. you get the drift?

Cheers mate just added you as a contact :) but not really sure what that means:D

LOL...I think if I post anything new you get to see a preview (lucky you!).

Just don't feel tempted to tell me I've won a medal or a rosette or anything.

Thanks mate...:1st:

I use flickr as a web host for my pictures.

I've seen others on their whos pictures I like. If I add them as a contact, when I next log in it will show their most recent uploads, so you can see what they have been doing.

Flickr can lead to work, one of my shots was picked up by UPS from flickr....

I use it mainly to share pics amongst friends and family. I email them the link to the albums. Other than that I use it to post pics on here.

I like a look about everynow and again too.

It's a great for:
-finding and viewing the work of others.
-keeping track of the work of other people. You can get updates when they upload something new
-Meeting others. I've met more than a few people from my area off there and go 'togging with a handful on semi-regular basis.
-specific enquiries. There are enough people on there, one is bound to know the answer to what you want to ask, if only you can sniff them out. I needed to know if my bridge camera was suitable for infrared. I found one lady in australia who used the same kit as me and asked her how it performed before I splashed out on the filter.

Good for hosting and for showing your work off to a huge audience.

I think more and more companies are starting to look for stock there, so provided you tag everything properly you could make some money from it.

The useful groups (I think) are those that are specific to lenses. Always nice to see what people are doing with a lens you may be interested in.

Flickr is what you make of it, you could post pictures of yourself in various myspace poses if you like, or you could take it seriously. Personally I get a lot from it.

I have the gallery on my website linking to my flickr account so I only have to update one of them (flickr) which is much easier plus none of the images are using up the webspace I have.

Another thing I use flickr for is to have a look at other togs work on a specific location I am visiting

I had an email from someone in the Netherlands asking if he could use one of my photos (of a box turtle at he local aquarium) on his not-for profit forum to do with Turtles/Tortoises - I said yes so long as he credits me. I also get the odd hit from pixel-peeper using my photos as sample images for camera lenses.
Mostly its a way for me to show friends/family/coworkers my latest photos.
As KayJay said, it's what you make of it. Hopefully in a few years time I will get some work off it, but if not, it doesn't matter.

My thoughts exactly. What an odd thread this is!

Just returned the compliment.

You have some cracking shots on there.
Thanks mate  Your photos are top stuff

I joined Flikr some time ago but have never been grabbed by it... there's just too many members and photos posted!

I was exactly the same! probably signed up 18 months ago and only used it for hosting, then about two weeks ago uploaded a few shots, joined a few groups and now I am well impressed with Flickr  as others have said you can find out almost anything and it is a great source of inspiration and motivation.

Must admit I'm still learning what it can do and what it's all about? but glad I started using it :)

Steve
