Flickr Dilemma

Yes
Hi all, I know this sort of thing has been asked numerous times but I thought I would pick all of your brains anyway :P.

Someone has contacted me via Flickr saying:

Hi... I found your textured leaf photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/somethingreallyoriginal/2548928464/) in a Google image search and my fiance and I would really like to use this photo a a background image on our (non-commercial, personal) wedding web site.

I noticed it wasn't CC-licensed and that some of your other work is, but if you're ok with our use of the photo, obviously I can give you attribution.

Thanks,

My first thought was that I wouldn't particularly mind so long as I got a mention BUT I've just remembered this particular photograph is currently on Alamy.

I'm not entirely sure what the best and politest way to respond would be. On the one hand I'm grateful that they contacted me instead of just using it regardless but on the other I'm not sure what a non-commercial wedding is and why it would want this photograph. A personal website about weddings perhaps?

If anyone can think up a reasonable reply to such a question it would be appreciated. I could send them a message with a link to the photo on Alamy but I don't want to come across rude. On a site note, this was written at about 6:30 in the morning so please excuse any poor readability issues!

Whatever kind of web site they want to use it for - the picture still has a value. Ask for more information - a link to the website - and then tell them the price. Nothing should be FREE!

I had two magazines call me this past week wanting pics from my stock photo site (www.awpstockpictures.com) of course I said yes and when I told them there would be a fee and asked about their circulation figures etc - they both said - they'd just go and find something on Flickr!! PLEASE don't give work away for free! One of these magazines was charging almost a thousand pounds a page for advertising!

How much would you get if they bought the image through Alamy? Charge them that amount and send them a CD with the image on.

I agree with the OP in that I can't see what non-commercial site would also be about weddings, seems a bit of a strange idea. As has been said, link the person to the Alamy page so he can see the value of the image, and go from there.

Sounds like the website is the couple's personal one to show their friends & family stuff about their own wedding. If it's an issue, ask if you can see it.

Not sure I would post pictures that I have on Alamy elsewhere tbh =/

Alamy do not require exclusive use of images - some of the images I have on Alamy are also on other picture libraries and all are on my own stock picture site. That is not a problem.

If you have it on Alamy I'd be inclined to say it's a commercial image and point them to the Alamy link. Unless you feel you want to give it away. Up to you.

Thanks for the replies everyone, they are very much appreciated. I decided to send a link to that photograph at Alamy and wished them good luck with their website. I think it's very unlikely that they will purchase it but you never know.

You did the right thing - good luck - hope they buy!
