I have recently started using Flickr and find it very usefull and went Pro last week.
One side of this is to upload pics of my daughter and family, only for my parents etc to keep up to date. These are just snaps and kept private.

I have made a set that contains these snaps, however they still appear in my photostream.

Q1) Is it possible to have these so that they only appear within the set and not on my photostream page ?
Q2) What is a collection and what is the difference between a set and a collection ?

sorry if this is LOL stupid but I am frustrated and getting nowhere !

I've just had a look at your photostream and can't see them so I assume they are private.

You will be able to see them in your photostream, even if they are private- just means that others won't be able to (I cant see them!)

A collection contains sets.

Just mark them as private and you'll only be the one that can view them when logged in (you can also set it so that people you add as friends/family can view them but not general public). Great for backing up those images you never want to lose

Yeah, sorry, I know that they are private but I would prefer to not have them visible to myself when I look at my photostream, if that makes sense.

Other alternative, I have seen on flickr (EdinburghGary perhaps), was a single image in the photostream that, when clicked, then displayed the set, therefore there would only be one image for the set in my photostream.

I know it sounds strange that I dont want pictures of my daughter in my photostream but they are just snaps but are getting numerous and mean flicking through many pages.

If it cant be done it cant be done, just thought it strange that once added to a set it still appeared in the main photostream.

From flickr FAQ ...

"How is a collection different than a set?

A set contains photos. A collection can contain sets (or other collections).

Isn't this just sets of sets?
Yes, but no. It's better"

Bit vague that !

Go to my Flickr (link below) and you will see that I have my homepage set to display my photostream and my collections on the right.

If you click through to one of the collections (for example, portraits) you then see the SETS within that COLLECTION.

I use it as a way of putting my photos into a style, whilst keeping some form of organisation within that style.

Just put them in a set together then if you want to look at them you can click through to that set only - it's showing in your photostream (when you look at it while you're logged in) since it shows you all of your own photos but if you've made them private they won't be shown to others.

Cheers ScarySquirrel,

Think I will head in that direction then browse my collections and sets more than the actual photostream as it grows. I am an attention to details freak and hate the random mix of all photos in the photostream.

You can change the date they were uploaded to rearrange the photostream! So if you have an earlier date! they will be at the back end of the photostream....

But if you want other people to view the odd private picture you can choose the "All Sizes" button and send them the direct link to the appropriate size.

Cheers, good tip, I can do this and send the "snaps" to the bottom pages

Markk, again thanks, another good tip
