When I look at my stats on Flickr, under 'referrals' I have a strange domain name from a foreign site. So foreign, I don't even know what language it is. it's a forum of some sort. Does this mean it's just visited by them, or they have mentioned one of my pics on their site/forum? Just out of interest....

Thank you :)

Click it and find out.. but unless you tell us what the link is, all we can do is guess.. (forum, blog, search engine..). All the stats listing tells you is that someone accessed your image (clicked through to the photopage) from that domain address.

It's referred from this site..... basgaza.com 5 times!

I wonder what they looked at? Have I been mentioned or something?!

It seems odd that they've visited five times. I must have something they like! it'd be interesting to know if anyone can find out where/what the link is!

I think part of the problem is that 'referrer' can have more than one meaning. It usually means 'the page or site containing the link that the visitor clicked on to get to your picture'. But referrer details can be faked or altered. I suppose we're not the first to have this happen. There might be something in the Flickr FAQs about this, or in the Flickr help group.

There are a few pics I found but they all link back to Turks on Flickr. In your stats click each picture and look at the referrers till you find that site. No?

Found it! Image 5924, which is a glasswing butterfly? On a car forum?

Lol I need to find someone who speaks Turkish!

A quick look at the tags in the photo and it seems the butterfly's scientific name is Greta Oto. The word oto is along the top of the Turkish forum. A quick play on my iPhone translator and oto translates to cars. I'm assuming greta is great so maybe someone on the turkish forum has searched for greta oto which then leads them to your photo via the tags.

Yours,
Sherlock Holmes aka Paul

Well I never! Clever you! :)

It doesn't explain where my photo is on their site though :(

Thanks!

Might not mean you photo is on their site. They could have a Google search bar built into it which would lead to your photo if "greta oto" was typed.

I guess that's the explanation then. There was me thinking I was internationally acclaimed....

You are Tori, just undiscovered as yet !!!
At least you've got some information on yours, Last week I chucked up a load of snaps I took from a family walk and For the whole week I was getting over 800 views a day (usually only get around 70) all on that uploaded batch. Unfortunately they were all consistently Unknown referrers.......

Thinking perhaps that tagging them Nuclear Power Station may have got them on an Anti Terrorist RSS feed or something (It was a sensible tag as Bradwell was barely visible in the distance).......

Lol! I hardly get any views, but I only have a few contacts and don't tag every photo.

I can see Bradwell from my house! All be it about 40 ish miles away! :)

What happens if you click on the link in your stats? There's a second level of referrer stats that gives the individual referring page from the domain and a link you can click through to go to the referring page.. the only referals this never works for is Facebook due to their anonymising outbound-link confirmation.

Dave - did you google your Flickr username and some of the tags? if you're getting hits then someone has somewhere correctly referenced you image with a click-thru, so if you aren't getting the stats you can at least make a guess at bbcode or html phrases to search for to try and find it. Unknown referrals can be annoying, but they're not neccessarily impossible to track down.
