I'm off work today, nobody else in so I thought I'd try something different. Went into the garden and set these up (a bunch I bought for the wife) then realised I hadn't got a clue what they were. If anyone can enlighten me I'd be grateful. Also any C&C on the images is gratefully received.

Lovely photos Andy!

I think (stress the think !) that the first is a Carnation, and the third is a Gerbera, but can't remember the middle one!

Enjoy the rest of your day off!

The first is a carnation, the other two are yellow :D

Carnation and yellow mmmm.... most amusing, still one out of three ain't bad. (y)

Thanks klc you've beaten the previous best by 100%. 2 down 1 to go. (y)

First - Carnation
Second - Chrysanthemum (aka golden-daisy)
Third - Gerbera

Thanks guys, full house. I can go and save them as their proper names rather than 'yellow flower1' etc.(y)

#4 is a chrysanthe aswell i think or maybe a type of dahlia. Looks more like a dahlia

2 and 4 are both Chrysanths-there are hundreds of variations but leaf shape is the biggest clue.:D

No.4 is definitely 100% a chrysanthemum. Sorry to anyone in the Dahlia camp ;)

I may not know much about photos yet, but do I know my flowers - I worked part time in a florist's when I was in college.
LOL - at least I can be of some use on the forum, even if it's not directly related to photography !

Dahlias and Chrysanths are quite closely related. They're both in the same family (along with Asters and weirdly enough Dandelions :wacky:) so the flower heads on some of the double blooms do look very similar.

The main classification difference is geographic origin. Dahlias are indigenous to South America and Chrysanths to the Far East and India, but there are subtle differences in stem and leaf shape too. The rounded leaf shape in photo no.4 screams "Chrysanth".

Unless they were bought in a specialist florist's, you can almost guarantee that they'd be Chrysanths anyway. Dahlias are quite hard to come by in your regular high street florist's but Chrysanths are everywhere. Florists used to refer to them as AYRs because at one time they were the only flower available to UK florists All Year Round.

p.s. Forgot to say - I love the photo of the Gerbera !

Thank you Sarah for your identification and kind words. I like it when someone takes the time to explain things in detail, shows they care.

Thanks

Andy
