Flying with your camera.

One of our guys rang air Canada today to confirm a couple of things, and I can take my laptop bag and camera bag in the cabin, profided both weigh less than 10kg, and one fill fit in the overhead locker, so problem solved.

Thanks for the input, and John that's aweful about what happened to you in Joberg!

Even if the bag is slightly over the weight limit, you would more than likely get away with it. They can't seriously suggest you check it in as it would breach their terms and conditions :rules: ... Just don't take the pish

My in-laws had their hand luggage weighed because it 'looked heavy'
They had to re-arrange it in order to get away with not having it checked in.

Hand baggage is rarely weighed on the proper airlines ( BA, Lufthansa, BMI etc ), a bit different on the no frills carriers. I have often taken 3 bags onto BA flights and noone cares. If you are travelling in economy the trick is to board early and get the best overhead locker space, of course Club World etc and you can take virtually anything on as hand baggage. I would definitley take your camera gear on as hand baggage. Had a bag go missing on an Air Canada flight a couple of years ago to Toronto and it was a nightmare dealing with them to be perfectly honest. It seems French is their language of choice. Having said that, I used to regularly attend overseas conferences at work and would often put a Cisco ISDN router in my hold suitcase ( wrapped in a couple of towels ) and never had a problem. Then again it wasn;t my gear so I didn't care if it it went missing / got damaged.

As an aside, keep your camera with you as airport terminals make interesting places to take pics. Airside at terminal 5 Heathrow is stunning and I'll have my camera with me when I go through there for pleasure next month. Really regret not having a decent camera with me when going through Kansai Osaka on a work trip recently. That place is amazing.

what are they like with people taking pictures in airports in this wonderful day and age of all togs being terrorists?

As long as you don't wave a kalashnikov around and have a boarding card, it should be OK...you may be asked what they're for, but if you wear a hawaiian shirt, sombrero and shorts, it should be obvious what you're there for...
