Focal Length Crossover?

Hi,

I am looking to get a new lens, I am still pretty much at the hobby stage but would like to expand etc. I have a Nikon D40 with 18-55mm kit lens and am thinking about getting the 55-200mm. My kit lens isnt VR so i also though about getting an 18-105mm VR and selling hte 18-55mm I have. Does it seem silly to then later get say a 70-200mm or 70-300mm when there will be crossover between 70-105mm? Some expert advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Josh

It's not silly, as it isn't that big of a crossover.........18-105mm is a good range for a general walkabout lens. I use a 17-55mm range and find I have to change lens a lot for more reach, if I could go to 105mm then I wouldn't have to as much.

Another thing is, if you in future buy a 70-200, you may find you need a faster lens so you go for an f/2.8........in which case, the 2 lenses will have different use to you regardless of the focal range. If you are in a situation where you need a fast lens, you will change over to it anyway.

the 70-200mm is a pro lens and in a different league to the others.

Having some crossover can be useful. Murphy's law states that if you have the 18-xx fitted, you'll need a focal length of xx + y so will have to swap lenses to the longer, ath which point the subject comes towards you, meaning that the 18-xx is needed again.

70-200mm is a pro lens - just saw the prices!!!

maybe a 70-300mm would be more in my price range.

I also forgot to mention that I have a 35mm f/1.8.

Thanks for all the super quick responses

It's that price for a reason - the new 70-200mm f/2.8 VR ll is just amazing.

Another question would be what's better int terms of practicality, quality and price?

- 18-55 + 55-200
- 18-105 + 70-300
