Focal point when in manual mode

Am trying to learn manual mode but am struggling to set a focal point. Any help? Am using canon 40d

Have you turned the AF off? You should be able to select AF points as you would in any other mode....

No AF is on

....hmmmmm.... is the selector on the rear (the little joystick) or the main command dial in conjunction with the AF point button, are they allowing you to select a single AF point?

Is it focussing?
