Strange one this....

A friend of mine lent a Canon 70-300 lens to a work colleague who went to South Africa recently. Whilst there the focusing went all blurry, the screen on the camera went black and an error message came up.

However since then my friend tried the 70-300 lens on his own camera and it was again all blurry and not focusing. Now whatever lens he puts on his camera everything is blurring.

He hasn't changed any setting from what I understand. Body is an EOS 350D (or maybe a 400)

Any ideas ??

possible lens contacts on camera/lens are dirty. give them a little clean.

i guess it's possible (but perhaps unlikely) that the AF sensor has got some debris or dust on it and this is causing the problem. you've got nothing to lose by taking the lens off and blasting a few puffs of air from a rocket blower into the camera to hopefully remove any dust from the af sensor - which iirc is located at the base of the camera body.

Could be that the af mirror spring has failed - remove the lens and take a shot, watching the mirror. If the auxiliary af mirror is flapping about or bounces then the spring is away.
