Focus Issue?

What lens, what aperture, on a tripod or not, what distance? You should be looking at a minimum of 25x focal length to do these tests and the 45 deg idea isnt ideal either.
 
Canon dont recommend the 45Deg test as the AF doest like it, your way to close as well. Canon again recommend 50x focal length (50 x 70mm = 3.5m) you can probably get away with 25x but anything closer will create problems that are not there. Have a search on here for better test targets e.g flat cereal box and a ruler laid to the side of it. Even better is to use real world targets and to try not to get in the habit of pixel peeping (easier said than done i know as im a nightmare for it).
