Focus issues

I recently solD all my kit and upgraded. I now have a 1dmk2n, 24-70 sigma and 70-200L. I was at a local village hall gig on Saturday and used the 24-70. The focus is off on quite a lot of the images. I tried the lens on a different subject and it seemed quite sharp, I had a similar experiance with the L lens and then got pin sharp focus? I am now thinking that I'm not getting the focus right rather than the equipment - amy ideas?

Could it be it's focused on the mic stand rather than the subject and that's what's made them appear soft?

No wonder when I see what shutter speeds you're using compared to the focal length - this is quite likely to be motion blur!

Never use a shutter speed with a lower number than your focal length unless you're using an Image Stabilised lens or a tripod.

With good technique it's certainly pretty easy within reason IMO. Although in this instance I think you may well be right.

thanks for the replys, I'm used to doing landscape stuff and generally use AE. Will try manual next time

It's not the fact that you used Av that's the problem per se, you just need to keep an eye on the shutter speed it comes up with. By the looks of it your fairly maxxed out in terms of light giving settings (widest aperture, high ISO - don't know how the 1dmk2n looks above that) and it doesn't look like metering is an issue, unless you've reduced the EV in post (if so, dial in some negative EC to get a shorter shutter), so shutter speed is your only variable.

If you can bump your ISO to 1600 you could try that, and that would get you close to your ideal shutter speed. You could also try resting the camera on something for stability. If you're happy to change your point of view, then you could try getting a bit closer (e.g.to 50mm) so that you don't need such a long shutter.

Moving subject is more likely the problem even if hand holdability isn't.

Tripod, IS or a well trained hand won't get over that.

have you set the eyepiece correction

if autofocus then you may have too low a speed
