Yes
Hi all, I have recently bought the Canon 600D,and are doing a lot of reading up on the cameras settings ect. One of the things I can't seem to find out is, how do you focus on the eyes when the camera is on a tripod?. I know that when hand held you can half press the shutter button then recompose.

If you are using a tripod I would be inclined to use live view and manually focus.

If you use back button focus, it's simple focus on the eyes release the back button recompose then take the shot. That is one advantage of seperating the focusing from the shutter. Check your manual to see how to set this function.

Or you could focus using the half shutter press then switch into manual focus mode, but make sure you don't knock the focus ring.

Use LiveView, move the green square over an eye and autofocus or as others suggest focus manually.

I did not know you could move the green square! Could you tell me how I do that,or point me in the right direction in regards to the camera manual.

Don't know what page it is for the 600D but have a look under custom function settings. Enable you to allocate the * button to focus and leave the shutter to deal with exposure. On my 7D I have a dedicated AF button, but used to use the * button on my 350D

Thinking on this more the even easier way is to change the 'AF mode in LiveView' setting to the option that includes face detection. That way you don't even need to move the green square, it will do it for you. I don't have a 600d manual so I can't say what page this setting is on, sorry.

You move the square manually using the arrow buttons I expect - that's how it works on a 60d. You can't move the square if 'AF mode in LiveView' is set to Quick.

SixToes you are correct, you can move the square/rectangle by means of the arrow buttons. Is it possible to turn the rectangle 90 degrees?
I have now also enabled back button focus. I presume you don't need to keep your finger on the *Button once you have focused ?

i dont think thats possible. The green rectangle is the same aspect as the screen so if you could flip it vertically it wouldnt make any difference just give you black bars to the sides of the screen
