My boss is considering going to the Focus on Imaging exhibition in 2009 with a view to possibly exhibiting there in 2010. Does anyone have any views / experiences of the show? What kind of attendees go? Is it more geared towards the amateur or professional photographer? How much marketing goes on (other than the fabulous viral films) to ensure a good turn out of attendees? Any thoughts / advice, very much appreciated. Thank you.

Exhibiting at Focus depends on your target audience. Visitors tend to be a mix of both Professional and Amateur.

It was interesting that in 2008 a number of companies that had not exhibited at Focus the previous years were back, notably Canon.

As far as marketing is concerned Mary Walker has been in the exhibition industry for many years so her company knows the ropes about getting the visitors in. In fact I have just received notification that as a past visitor I have been pre registered. ( In fact twice).

If you want to see a list of exhibitors for 2009 check out the Focus web site for details

To be honest if your boss is interested, he really should be talking to the exhibition organisers about promotional activity.

I have been for the past 4 years and it is a tremendous show to go to. I already have a ticket for 2009. Where else would you find 30/40 thousand+ like minded people all in one place over the exhibition period. What I like about it is not only being able to have a hands on, but being able to talk to the manufactures representatives and not some shop assistant who doesn't have a clue.
Mention anything to do with photography and you will find it here, from aerial photography to studio work, desktop printers to huge professional ones. Digital editing workshops to wedding photo albums. You name it and its there, if there is one drawback by midday its so crowded it is a job to get near some of the more popular stands.

Even talking to visitors can be informative, there is a usually someone who already has the piece of kit your interested in and can give you first hand experience of it.

I would highly recommend a visit if only once even if to look at some of the hugely expensive cameras or wacky gimmicks .
