Bit of a daft question, is the lens in manual mode and are you far enough away from your subject for the camera to focus?

You've got the camera set to continuous focusing. There will be a switch somewhere that has been flicked :)

What option do you have the dial set to and what focusing mode?

AI, one shot or servo

Try this:

Please follow these steps to have the AF points and other viewfinder
information light up in red:

1. Power the camera on.

2. Press the <MENU> button.

3. Select the [Custom Functions] tab.

4. Select [Custom Function Group III].

5. Press the <SET> button.

6. Select [C.Fn. III-8: VF Display Illumination].

7. Press the <SET> button.

8. Change the setting to [Enable].

9. Press the <SET> button.

Well done Paul, I've sold my 7D and couldn't remember what C.FN it was under as the manual went with it. By the time I'd looked it up you'd beat me to it.

Go and have some fun now Gary, it's a big difference to the 50D I'll bet.
