Focus problem with 10D

I have a focus problem with my 10D, basically it tries to focus and stops,just out of focus, shutter wont fire, if I switch it to manual focus, everthing works fine, same hapens whatever lens I use.

Have you checked the usual things, such as battery charge level and the cleanliness of the lens mount contacts?

What's the light like where you're shooting. Are you focucussing on something flat and uniform or something with nice contrasty boundaries on which it can lock?

tried, fresh batteries, taken the grip off, cleaned the contacts, good light this afternoon,(lunchtime) nice clear No Parking sign, red on white,.
I dont quite understand why the shutter wont fire, no error messages, if I switch the lens to manual everything works on manual focus.

I think the shutter wont fire because the camera knows that focus hasn't been achieved. I think that's how they all work in autofocus.
