focus problem with d2xs

Hi all.
was doing a wedding recently and half way through it my d2xs was not auto focusing on the subjects (the light was starting to dim),
back in the studio tried it and it was fine.
use it again for an on location portrait in good light and would not auto focus again. i did have a d80 body with me both times which worked perfectly so it saved the day but why is my main camera doing this?
any advise would b much appreciated
 
could it be the lens you had on had a focus limit switch - switched to limit by error? I've done that before!
 
35 f2 nikkor 50 1.4 sigma 70/200 f2.8 nikkor. all the same problem.
in these cases the D80 focused far better,
pretty sure it was the body not focusing in lower light.
 
i will give the contacts on the body a good clean,
its defo on S (checked there just incase)
i think it may have 2 go 2 nikon for a check up. £££££
 
The D2xs had the better firmware that was supposed to eliminate problems like this; I'd suspect a mechanical glitch - i.e. dirty contacts, poorly-fitting lenses etc before going down the software/firmware route...

Has it suddenly started doing this or has it become more common over a period of time?
Maybe moisture in the camera?
Did it happen with all the focus-areas, or just the ones off-centre?
