I've got a Canon AF Sigma 30mm 1.4 that just occassionally stops AFing properly. It's fine in MF, and if I switch to MF and twiddle & then back to AF it works.
It's not a cheap lens, so I was hoping someone has some idea if/how I can fix it!
There may be nothing wrong with the lens, it may just have trouble locking onto something it can focus on. The focus system works by measuring the contrast within the focus point(s). If there is nothing there for it to work with it will just hunt and then give up. Also if you are too close that can give problems as it may be outside it's focus range.
If you find it still fails to focus on subjects you think it should the a phone call to Sigma may be in order.
Do you have the same problem with other lenses? by process of elimination if it only happens on that lens then its the lens thats faulty. if it also happens on other lenses then first I would clean the contacts, and if it still happens i would suggest sending the camera back for service. Bearing in mind that the range you are using is within the lens parameters.
