At least I think thats what its called, the bit that sits at an angle behind the mirror?

I took my lens off and my daughter flicked the mirror up. Now the screen either sits right against the mirror or against the shutter and doesn't allow it to open.

Help? how much will it cost me to get this fixed?

The focussing screen is the bit above the mirror that it folds up against - looks like frosted glass.
The foldy-bit behind the mirror is part of the metering and AF sytem...

Short answer:

Broken...

and...lots...

that bit then. I can take photos in manual focus but the metering keeps blinking, its just sitting in the wrong place.
 
There's a hinge pin that breaks on the 350D that hinges the secondary AF mirror.

When you very carefully lift the mirror does the secondary mirror flip up behind it it or stick down.

Sadly if it's the case that the mirror in any way does not flip up properly then it's a bin job. the cost of repairs is prohibitive.

I'm waiting on a shutter for a 400D from the states, Canons repair cost for that is £247 GULP
 
At a rough guess, anywhere upwards of £80 - that's just what they charge to open the box - time and parts go on top of that.
I think Canon operate a fixed-amount repair of £120 (someone correct me if I'm wrong), which i'd certainly be considering with this kind of damage.

Also add to the cost a lockable cupboard for your cameras in the future to prevent little fingers from tampering.

I've realised I'm going to have to spend about £300 on lockable furniture for all my shiny kit now that we have a 'small-person' due at any moment...
 
I phoned a repair shop and was quoted 44quid + vat.
 
That was the price if they have to replace the mirror, if they can fix the hinge it will be cheaper, taking it in tommorrow for a fix and a sensor clean. :)
 
Great news! Christmas not ruined after all and daughter not sold to Romanian Gyspies...(something to keep in reserve in case something else happens though...)
 
Hmm... how much do you think I could get for her?
