Just out of interest; if I do go for the 5dmkll, (and it's looking likelier by the minute), does anyone have any experience of it's sound quality for videos? Most folk I guess use the video capability for visual reasons, but I'm interested in how good it's sound is.

Anyone??

it has an xlr port and you can get hot shoe mount mic holders, so I would use an external mic, maybe a boom?

Not really into video much (might want to at some point) but I'm an audio tech so know a bit about sound

Use an external mic, the internal one picks up EVERYTHING including the focus and image stability.

The on-board sound quality is mono and poor.
As has been said, it picks up all the camera/lens noise (AF motor, IS etc).
I use a Sennheiser MKE 400 mini-shotgun mic on mine .....
See here.
Although it's still mono the quality is much better and, being directional, the camera noise is reduced.

Wow! that lens !!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice. As I take photos at gigs, I want the 5D for it's low light capabilities and it would be nice to also be able to use it for the odd video.

Why is it difficult to edit?

Because it's MASSIVE.

I wish it was a simple as that ........... although a beefy PC will have more of a chance.

Here is a full, untouched, straight from the camera, snippet of video from a 5D2.
This is full HD 1920x1080p video.
The audio is from the cam and is really just ambient audio from the hide.
It's 12 seconds long and a 63mb file size.

For those interested, try playing it on your PC.
Then try editing it in the software of your choice.

wow, 5MB/s - I'd be spec'ing a machine with about 16GB of physical RAM to edit films at this rate, providing enough capacity to hold two copies (working and undo) of a 15 minute film plus OS etc. We're probably about 3 years from that being a mass-market platform.

It says the page cannot be found. I regularly edit HDV video so I'd like to see how this differs from HDV.

Also it does have a mic input but it is definitely not an XLR input!

EDIT, link is working now :)
