hi,

im looking at getting a fisheye lens for a wider angle for my light painting, my friend who uses a 15mm on his full frame looks sweet but cant decide weather to go for the 10mm or 8mm sigma which sits at both sides of his. could anyone upload some pics so i can get more of an idea which to go for as it could work out an expensive mistake..

cheers, phil

I know you said a 1.6 crop, but to be honest you won't really notice an awful lot of difference in 1mm each side. I have the 10.5mm on a nikon which equates to 15.75 on full frame (Nikon is 1.5 crop if I recall correctly). Here's a couple of photos that might show you what it can do.

And this room I photographed is a really small but you even see the table I had my gear resting on to the left of me:

It's extremely wide at almost 180 degrees each direction. If you compose slighly out you'll have your feet in the photo

well this was taken on the Sigma 10-20mm at 10mm
I was about 1 to 2 ins from the car

not that i've any experience with fish eyes but i'd go for the 8mm over the 10 because it'll be more extreme otherwise you're just bordering on ultrawide and if you're using a fisheye tbh you're pretty much going for the extreme distortion style anyhow?

This is from a 1.5x crop body and an 8mm Sigma.

The thin band at the top is the sea horizon and at the bottom of the shot you can see the base of the cliffs - a full 180 degrees (although on a crop body you lose slices off the sides/top & bottom of the circle).

The 8mm doesn't cover the frame, you'll get black bits at each corner. The 10mm will cover the frame. So... how much PP work do you want to do? ;)

Quick rundown of the different types of fisheye.

Diagonal fisheye - picture is 180 degrees across the diagonal, when fitted to a camera with the correct sensor size.
Full frame - Canon 15mm, Nikon 16mm
Crop sensor - Nikon 10.5mm, Sigma 10mm, Samyang 8mm

Circular fisheye - picture is completely circular, with 180 degree field of view, when fitted to a camera with the correct sensor size.
Full frame - Sigma 8mm
Crop sensor - Sigma 4.5mm

great shots there! Love the first one especially.
