#1 captures a better sense of the expansive nature of the forest. Suppose it depends on what look you were going for. For me the crop on #2 feels a bit awkward after seeing #1.
The first for me. Its still operates on the rule of thirds in many ways, just because the subject isn't on one, other things are, thirds means little when the eye looks through the view nicely as it does in first... its defo less happy looking at the second mind.
Thanks for the comments guys and gals. I will have a look at cropping a bit of the bottom in No1. and maybe play around with the crop position for No.2
