Formatting or deleting Memory Card?

I've only had my Nikon D5100 since Christmas but have been formatting the memory card after I've transferred the photos to my computer. I've just noticed that the different folders of photos have the same numbering, all starting with DCS_0001 etc.

Is it normal for the numbering to reset when formatting a memory card? Would I be better off just deleting the card?
 
Format it in camera.
 
Format the card in camera (as above) not on the PC.

How do you have your camera set - do you have it set to start again with the file numbering (following format) or do you have it set to continuous numbering - might be worth a check

I've had a look in the various menus but I can't see where to see if it is set to continuous numbering or start again numbering. Any ideas where this is on a Nikon D5100?
 
Had another look and found it in the Custom menu and have set it to continuous/on. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.
