Yes
Found a lens in a drawer (was given to me ages ago by OH's boss to sell on ebay) but coz i didnt have a clue what it was etc....its been sat in a drawer and his boss has forgotten about it.

now i have a canon 500D i bought yesterday......wondering if it will fit!

i only have a kit lens at the mo.

this one says on it Jessop, but then it says Sigma 17-200mm?? or something like that, but then on the side...it says 'for canon' and also says macro on it!!
im totally new to this so would love to know if it would fit...how i get it to fit...and is it a good lens.....and what would i use it for??

on my canon 500D it has gold prong sort of things to fit a lens.....but on this sigma lens it has 2 metal prongs that stick out??

thanks everyone!!!

pictures would be neat!
Jessops - a company that sells stuf
Sigma - a company that makes stuff
Canon - a brand of camera

so Jessops selling a Sigma lens to fit a Canon is entirely to be expected!

I want to stick my neck on the line and say that it is a Canon fit lens manufactured by Sigma with a Jessops filter on it.

lol ill try n get some pics of it for you....its at home at the mo.

on the very end of the rim it says Jessop...(but not jessops?) if u look down the lens at the end it says sigma 17-200mm, and on the base (where u would click it into the camera) it says for canon!!
but i cant get it to fit on the 500D so maybe id need a ring or something for it? i have no idea! lol

The filter screwed on the front of the lens is a Jessops brand.

Does the lens have an AF / MF switch on it?

ermm...cant remember seeing one?? there was a little red dot on it with the unlock and lock sign. and a bigger red dot you press to enable to unlock it....but i dont think i saw a switch?

david.....no thats what my kit lens looks like.....instead of the gold bits, it has one long metal prong hanging out (when u move this....the shutter thing moves inside?) and another smaller prong that moves when u turn the lock and unlock bit.

lol sorry i cant explain any better!

Does it look like this?

http://www.mir.SPAM/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/earlyfdlenses/fdmount1a

If so its a FD mount, it will not fit any current EOS camera.

HTH

no...it doesnt look like that one.....
ive just looked all over the internet n cant find a pic of one! ill have to take a pic for you all to look at.

his boss uses canon...and i dont think its an old camera?

but it definitely doesnt have the gold bits on like the kit lens.

How about this?

Sorry for crap image, poor lighting, composition, etc...

think pin is slightly different i think.....
ill take a pic just for you all to make sure before i buy an adaptor...
plus is it worth it? what pics will i be able to take with it and is it any good?

Get a few pictures of the lens, not just the mount, and someone on herewill be able to tell you if it'll be worthwhile...

From the look of that adaptor, it's not got the AF Confirm chip, so your camera won't actually know there's a lens on the front at all. You'll have to set aperture and focus manually on the lens, and use AV mode on the camera to handle the metering. FWIW, I've used a similar adaptor ring to use my old Yashica fit lens on my EOS450D. It worked for me, but then I sort of come from the background of full manual cameras - manual shutter speed, aperture, film (yes-film not digital) speed, focusing, and a light meter that hangs on a cord around your neck!

If you can get it to fit, there are still a few problems you'll have to overcome..... it won't be able to select the shutter speed and aperture for you, you'll have to do it yourself. And it won't autofocus. So it'll be much harder than using the kit lens for example where you can just point and shoot.

That's assuming it's still in good condition optically! But if so, it covers quite a long range, and if you're after something longer than your kit lens (do you have any other lenses by the way?), it could be good!

chris....no i only have the kit lens and already miffed with how short it will zoom!! (ive only had it 2 days!)
thanks for all the advice...will get some pics on here for you....still scouring the internet for pics! lol

Interesting adapter - not seen one like that before - does it look as if it has a lens in it?

What will you be able to do with it? Well, you'll get a range of 17-200mm as opposed to your kit lens which is probably something like 17-55, so you will have a longer zoom.

One of the other canon owners will be able to tell you what modes you'll be able to use it in and how well it will work.

Key questions - do the Canons give a focus indicator with manual lenses (not just standard lenses in manual mode)? You will have to manually focus but you may or may not get an indication that you have the focus spot on.

And will metering work to allow Manual and Aperture modes OK? (or will you be limited to manual?)

Yes it has a lens in it - I think that the FD lenses focal plane is different to the EF/EF-S ones and it needs an extra lens to get the image sharp on the sensor.

It'll Work in AV mode - just set the aperture you want on the lens, then AV on the mode dial, and let the camera work out the exposure duration (shutter speed)

The adaptor doesn't appear to have the AF confirm chip, and will therefore not get any focus confirm lights in the viewfinder. Focus will have to be checked with the Mark 1 Eyeball.

Cheers.

The reason I've seen quoted before for lenses in adapters is to enable focus to infinity - the Nikons have the same problem, pretty much any third party lens type has a register distance smaller than the nikons so they need a lens in any adapter which tends to degrade the image quality.

As an olympus user I've got a small register distance so most things can be fitted with an adapter to mine.

I think some cameras will give focus notification with out needing an AF chip, maybe its the pentax ? not sure.

Snip...

I've got a Canon EOS450D and use a couple of old Yashica Lenses with it - i've 2 adaptors - one a £4 non-chipped one, and one a £15 chipped version. To be honest, it doesn't really bother me, but as I ordered one of each in the first place, I've just put one on each lens and treat them as EF fit manual lenses.

Now you have a idea what it is sell it like you where asked to do

md:shrug:

It won't be a 17-200mm; it'll be 70-200mm and worth £20 if you're lucky.

Blummin' heck! That is one dusty lens, i wouldn't even attempt to put that in the same room as a DSLR let alone fitting it (if it is the same fitment).

Not before it had a good hoovering anyway!

OK, well at least we can confirm what it is. It's a Sigma 70-200mm f/4-5.6 UC, for a Canon FD mount. Which means:
(1) it's at least 22 years old;
(2) it won't fit any Canon DSLR;
(3) even if you get an adapter to make it fit, it will be manual-everything.

Did your boss ask you to sell it on eBay or did you volunteer? If he asked you, that might say something about what he thinks of you, because it's not worth anything.

eBay Item number# 280343762731 in nice condition with caps and hood was offered at £16.99 + £4.00 P&P but had no takers.

A Vivitar with box, case and 2x teleconverter went for 99p + £4.00 P&P.

The Canon f/4 goes for £30 - £40.
