Back in the late 80's early 90's I was the proud owner of CKK 638T.
It was a Daimond White Ford Escort MkII Custom registered in 1977.

It was purchased from Haynes of Maidstone was such a nice example
thet it was chosen for a photoshoot for press purposes when the Series 1
Mk3 Rs1600i was released.

When I owned her she was standard appart from -2'' lowering blocks.

I purchased a 2.1 Pinto with 45 Webber side draughts, fast road cam etc.

She lowered on World Cup struts with Bilsteins all round.
Roller top bearing in strut tops, anti dive kit, quick rak etc.

The Chocolate Fishnet Recaro interior remained un changed.

I sold the car in Feb 1992 to a guy in Slough.

Many years later, I was curious to see if the car was still on the road, so I
joined the Passionford forum on the 15th Nov 2008 & asked if anyone of
the members had any info. Roll on this last weekend, I get a PM from the current owner. I felt a little funny
with excite to be honest.

Here are a few pics from when I owned her..........

The current warned me that the images he sent me of the car in its current state, may
be uppsetting.

He purchared her in 2009 & he hopes to start a full restoration. He also managed to
obtain the cars full owner history.

What you see in the following pictures is what was left when he purchased the car.....

I wasnt sure what to think when I saw these.

He purshased the shell, bonnet & nose cone. No electrics or glass was supplied.

Im gutted but also glad & hopeful that someone will put the hours in & save another classic.

Wow, that is sad. It's rotted in the usual places though. I had the MKII 1600 sport. I ached for the RS2000, but poor apprentice mechanics wages just couldn't stretch to it.
It'll be nice to see the progress of the restoration. Hopefully he will keep it original colour etc.
I'd be buying that off him and doing it myself!!

Kev.

Gotta love an old escort (especially flying sideways down a rally stage).

Shame about its current condition, I expect someone stripped it for a rebuild and ran out of money and/or had a change of circumstances. Unfortunately that's what happened with my last mini.

Probably still worth a fortune even like that, being a genuine RS2000 shell, presumably with appropriate V5C.

Wonder when Ford will realise how much money they could make if they put Mk1 and Mk2 shells back into production ...

I'm surprised they don't at least release the jigs and plans etc so like heritage now with mini shells

I'd be first in the queue, there's a guy not far from me rebuilding one at the moment. Been on going for 5 years, it's going to fantastic when finished.

That shell will be worth thousands, genuine RS 2000 shells are sought after as classic rally cars

They can make 30k fully restored

I bet all the people that scrapped mk1 and mk2 2 doors are grinding their teeth now

what a motor! At least it's not been scrapped and the guy who has it now is going to restore it.

Is that Glen Madeiros in picture #4?

Was looking at vatenens possibly hackenen can't remember which now mk2 the other week, in a lot better nick than that lol.

Try finding AVR328T my mk2, according to the dvlc it's on a sorn and is now black not sierra beige like it was when I got it :D

Jigs will be long gone now.
They probably went not long after the Mk3 was introduced. Press tools are sold on after a new model is introduced just to be able to supply panels for the standard 10 year period, sometimes longer. I'd very much doubt the original press tools are around anymore either.
I always dreamt of having a white RS1800. Saw one once in a Performance Ford specialist in Newbury Park near Ilford. Would have been around 1983/4. Car was like new and very few miles, one previous owner, Ford Motor Co.

Many, many (many ) moons ago I witnessed a solid, if slight rough round the edges, MK II 2 door Automatic (anyone that knows their Escorts will know why that's a good thing) go through the auction - the bidding started at a tenner and went up, in 50 pence bids, to £22.50

Nice to see some other old Ford fans on here.

That car is pretty far gone, but where there's a will there's a way as the saying goes.

Not sure if non forum members can see this but worth a look if you can.

Escort RS2000 resto thread

This is my car which I restored about 20 years ago.

LOL Dave I bet the youngsters of today wouldn't know what the small round hole in the front scuttle was for :D

I've owned (and indeed own) cars older than that and I don't know what it's for either

You don't have that particular small round hole on a Mini! ;) :p

[I think he means valence rather than scuttle]

shame. you can get a brand new heritage mini shell for about £5.5k.

£6500 including VAT.... and they are junk. I would never recommend one to my customers. The tooling is so worn out the panel fit is atrocious!

It costs around £9k to get a ratty shell restored to paint by a good company. By the time you've stripped the Heritage shell and put it right, you are up to that before you put any paint on on it!

Neil.... is that yours? let me see.... between 1993 and 1996?

As for the Escort.... yes, it's sad to see it like that. But hopefully it's back with an owner who appreciates it.

Starter Handle?

Shouldn't be too hard a job to refurbish the tooling. It's possible the tooling was that bad in the first place that the panels had to be made to fit anyway.
Different company , I know, but when Ford bought Jaguar, they sent some of the press tools down to Dagenham for us to refurbish as well as build new tools. It must have been a 'mare to repair pre-Ford Jags the panel fit was so poor. Jaguar also used loads of lead to fill hollows in the outer skin panels. It must have taken Jaguar alot of work to get the rear quarter panels on the XJ6's to fit as they were in such poor shape. Apparently Jaguar got rid of around 100 of their workforce after we'd refurbed the tools as they were no longer needed to finish the panels by hand.

Nilagin

Go to the top of the class lol.

My little old ma used to crank the Austin a35 on cold days to get it to start lol

used to be.. K reg rover shell :)

Ah, didn't realise the picture being referred to was of the Mk1 rather than one of those of the rusty Mk2 and I was trying to figure out which of the multitude of holes was being referred to ...

I have neither dog nor handle to convert mine to handle start, although they are readily obtained. It's too useful being able to use the hole to get a socket and 10" extension on the crank pulley to set the timing, rather than trying to turn the engine over by hand.

Hate to see some good/fun old cars go to rot, but like has been said hopefully its with an owner that will appreciate it and also look at it this way, as someone who has an old car in the garage they are very very slowly starting a restoration of, its going to get the slow attention to detail it needs to be done properly.. ;)

I thought Mark would have got that, being that the (L)Imp was the last car on the UK market that came with the starter handle hole....

The Citroen Dyane's production went on later than the Imp and it had a hand starter hole in the grille. The 2cv (same engine) could also be hand started of course and they were produced until 1990.

The Renault 4 went on even later, until 1992, although I'm not sure if the last ones still had a starting handle.

Rather charmingly, because the engine was mounted behind the FWD gearbox, the starting handle connected to a lug on the gearbox mainshaft.

But it's irrelevant. No proper car requres a starting handle. A proper car [and I own one] will spark and start on the ignition quadrant lever!!
