free alternative to autocad/vectorworks

Hello mate,

As a Mechancial Design engineer who uses AutoCAD on a daily basis I could be of assistance here with a bit more info.

What are your planned uses for said equivalent? Does it have to be 100% free or are you willing to spend a small amount eg..>£50? Is it only 2D your after or 3D too?

Feel free to PM or what not, this subject is in my real comfort/expertise area now, unlike photography where I am still the noob!
 
Autocad.... ohhhhh those were the days.... of archaic modelling.
Solidworks for me all the way, I can't stand Autocad anymore.
As for a free version. What do you need it for? 2D or 3d?
 
Agree'd AutoCAD is naff as you like for 3D, but 2D is great. Using 2008 now, and its finally had the overhaul it needed. Its far more intuitive now.

We use Pro Engineer Wildfire 3 for our modelling now. Occaionallt Cateer as thats what the aircraft manufacturers seem to use as standard.

Basically I want it for 2D and 3D work for architecture, but I don't want to spend money on anything until I get to university where I could probably get discounts.

I know plenty of free 3D rendering software packages, but I wanted something that is going to have a similar interface/control style/etc to something I'd have to use at Architecture School. I was under the impression AutoCAD and Vectorworks were the main to programs in use.
