free eqivilant to office

I think there is a free office "viewer" for certain file types. It allows you to open the document, but not make changes. Might be worth a try if openoffice can't open it.

Neo office is excellent for Mac but not sure if this available for PC?

Thanks,

Luke.

+1 for OpenOffice ...has been around for years and keeps getting better.

I use open office now after years of microsoft office. will never go back

Personally I wouldn't call Open Office friendly, I spent about ten minutes looking for how to change the font colour and promptly gave up. If one just needs Word processing, Abiword is a much nicer, smaller package similar to Word and is again free.

The help file quickly tells you how to change font colour.
A drop down option is also on the Formatting Toolbar, to view different Toolbars click on View / Toolbars and then select which ones that you want to see.

I used Open Office for a while, and although it was OK for basic spreadsheets and word processing, I couldn't quite get used to the slightly different functions and menu layout. To be honest, this is probably because I us MS Office all day at work rather than any problem with OO itself. But, I then found out that if you are an employee of a large firm that has an MS Office user license, then there is a little know "Home Use" scheme that enables you to buy MS Office for a discount price (using a code provided by your employer). I just bought MS Office Professional 2010 for £8.95 (download, but only an additiona £10 for a disc). Definitely worth looking into if you or any member of your family work for large employers.

just a heads up its getting confusing now seems people have moved on
the open office is still there but a new documentfoundation.org has sprung up to develop that now i think

a split from oracle ?

and a good alternative with added features to open office is http://www.go-oo.org/

OpenOffice, the free office suite spin off allied to Oracle; http://www.openoffice.org/

LibreOffice, the free office suite now issued by the wholly independent Document Foundation. http://www.documentfoundation.org/download/
