OK,

I seem to have got another one published:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7752579.stm

Thats my 6th BBC in as many weeks, and I also have had 3 printed in my local newspaper, the "Edinburgh Evening News" on the last month.

Now my question. Should I stop? I think I could now get one published every week in the BBC - it seems a lot easier than I thought.

The downside? They can do as they please with my image, 100%. The plus side, well if I were real sneaky, if I tried to get into this from a "commercial" point of view, I could always brag "As seen on the BBC", or "Published by the Scotsman" etc.

Apart from telling me how awesome I am, what do you think? Is it worth it?

Your so Awesome!!!!! :D :D :D

I think you should keep some sort of record that these have been on the bbc website for your portfolio why not!! Toot Your own horn, i would :D

Not to burst your bubble, Gary (he said, brandishing a large pin :suspect:) but it's dead easy to give your work away, especially when it's of the calibre of the stuff you have been posting here.

Out of interest, why not submit another of your images to the BBC, but make it clear that payment is required. If they agree then you'll know that you're on to something good ;)

I'd keep going, I did, I used to send a photo in every month for our local monthly gallery until they stopped it! I got a few in, think I might still have the links somewhere......

I guess alot depends on where your trying to go with your photography, do you want to make money out of it? Personally I'd be happy to have a shot pulished on the BBC every now and then and do OK in a few online or print competitions but I have no desire to make money out of photography. If you want to make money at some point your going to have to stop giving it away and start charging and I'd say the sooner you do it the easier it will be.

As long as you're just sending in fairly low res ones, I would keep going. Your name is published along with each one? At some point, you would hope that people will start to associate pics of scotland/edi with gary whittle. I would have thought it would be great to be able to approach a publisher, and for them to already know your name, and maybe have seen some of your pics.

A few years back I had a lot of stuff put on my local BBC site. As far as rights were concerned I treated it as a "public service" rather than a commercial project so it wasn't an issue. Then some of the staff changed and it all went a bit wonky and it would take weeks for anyone to even read an email, let alone reply so I just stop bothering. A pity as it was a useful means for getting good publicity for some of the local events I get involved and donate my time to.

Should you stop? No, as long as your happy to lose certain rights on the shots why not treat it as a sandbox for trying out ideas? Just ask them to credit the shots with your email address so you can get feedback or maybe even approached for work

its a personel choice

i stopped sending mine to the oxford mail unless they paid and they are allways reluctant, hard news they might.

once they took my pictures sent a photographer out who duplicated what ide done then sent mine back without paying me.

now ime of the oppinion that it puts people out of buisness when they can get them for free and devalues what you do.

saying that i gave pictures yesterday to a young local band just to give them a leg up,they were so grateful it was better than £100 to me.

so its your choice at least they credit which could get you recognised.

oh and by the way nice pic it may be dark and grim up north but youve some wonderfull views

Had about 3 published in the Evening News, I stopped sending them in because one of them they printed in B/W instead of colour which looked horrible by the time they finished with it. Never again

I wondered if they did PP - my bridge shot look over sharpened in the paper, by quite a bit. I noticed HALO's which I did not have in the original.

Look on the bright side. It's something you can feature on you website once it's up-and-running.

'As seen on/in...'
