Ive been using Open Office for the last 5+ years with no issues.

I replaced my PC at Christmas and did a new download which looked to be official, after that i was told on a forum its no longer supprted and i couldn't find a known safe download point.

I suspect it was something else that hijacked your web browser.

Well it changed to Open office

I would happily stay with it if i knew someone had done a clean download in the last few months and a link to it.

Even though its no longer supported you can still download the last release from apache's website.
Failing that you could try libreoffice.

Thanks will give Libre a go.

I have just changed to Libra office myself from Apache.. seems even faster.....

Downloads via Openoffice.org ought to be fine, but it's easy to click on a dubious version by mistake from a Google search for OO, or via one of the adverts you might see when Openoffice.org redirects you to Sourceforge (the site that actually hosts their downloads). You can verify a download before installing it using one of these methods: http://www.openoffice.org/download/checksums.html

However, like the other posters I now use Libreoffice, which is more actively developed, downloaded directly from: https://www.libreoffice.org

Will Libreoffice open OpenOffice docs and spreadsheets?

Yes.... and it will also open Word and excell and the like.

I can not think of any pressing reason to use microsoft at all. as it works on Linux as well

The latest I can find out is that Open Office is still on its way out.

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/04/28/apache_openoffice_not_dead_yet/

Libre Office was spun off from Open Office in 2010 when Open Office started getting neglected. Unlike Open Office, Libre Office is under a high level of active development. And is included in most Linux distros.

I was surprised that people still use Open office. But I suppose not everyone keeps up to date with computer news.

Edit: I've just been contacted by one of the Open Office guys who said that Open Office dying is fake news. So I wish them all the best.

They are both from the line of the historic Star office and later Sun and Oracle's open office, Who made the code free to use , Apache's development is now moribund but still downloads thousands of copies a day.
Libre office on the other hand is extremely active and looks like winning out big time.

Libreoffice user here - certainly recommended for non-commercial use. If you need to send documents, spreadsheets etc. to customers then there is no substitute for Microsoft office, but for home use or opening old documents (ironically word doesn't open docs I have from '98-'99) then it's really good.

Just installed libreoffice, seems a lot faster ,cheers guys.:)

Ask your employer if their Microsoft volume licencing covers home use of their office package.

Or o365 isn't actually that expensive. Worth it for 100% accurate formatting of docs created originally in Microsoft packages.

Libre Office is best IMHO

I use google docs. gets the job done without installing anything on my computer.

Use libreoffice. What happened with OpenOffice probably that you just googled it and downloaded from a dodgy website at the top of the results without checking the address and something else was downloaded with it.
Make sure you download from http://www.libreoffice.org/
