Friend wants a compact, I know nothing about them.... please help!

I've just had this message from a friend but I'm of no use as only know about dSLRs. Can anyone please give some suggestions?

I was wondering if you could give me some advice! I would like a new camera for christmas. Is there any chance you can give me some ideas of good cameras. I would like one that has a good flash as mine was rubbish in the dark. Also a good quality big screen. Also one that takes really clear bright pictures. Also a normal size!!!!!! My camera is quite old!

I know I might asking too much but is there any chances I could ask for some ideas for under £100, £150 and £200.

OK, so not loads to go on. She will only want it for snaps of her family, dog, holidays etc.

I looked into this recently for a friend.

I found an Olympus that was quite wide, and quick for under £90.

But the best one was the Panasonic lumix, as the quality was great (Leica lens).

I will find the model numbers now.
 
They are all pretty much the same :)

Pop to jessops or blacks and handle some - note down the model numbers and price (but don't buy any) of the ones she likes.
Then Pop to DP Review and see the specs/review/compare side by side and read the users reviews.

Whittle down to 2 or three, amazon them and see what come back as good price, or post back here. Should be some users with compacts...




I have used the tz3 (stolen on holiday) and the tz5 - I think the latest is tz10 and they are pretty good. Pricey though. Sony have a few nice slim ones with features like panoramic pictures (you turn the camera steadily and it stitches in camera). Or if they feel they are accident prone, look for the olympus tough series; shock (drop) proof to a metre, water proof to a few metres...

Lastly for those you like, search flickr to pictures, see what comes back.
 
I just bought a Canon Powershot SX230 hs, a penny under £200 at Currys. This was regarded as the best travel zoom by DP review and I tend to agree. 14x zoom, nice clear bright lcd and gps, if you need it.
So far I am very pleased with the shots i have taken. Its quite a small camera and fits in a pocket easily. It also has a great high speed movie mode that plays back as slow motion and loads of scene modes as well as full manual control. Great fun!
