From 1000d to 20D?

I've got a budget of around 350 quid plus can sell my 1000d for about 200 quid.

I thought I could trade my 1000d for 40d (I'd had to put about 200 over the top of 1000d to get 40d)
Or sbould you sell my 1000d for 20d and get some glass?
I was thinking of geting 17-85mm
Im a bit scared of the screen size, is it really that small on 20D will I lose much?
The reason I want a different body is that I find my 1000d going only upto 1600ISO which sometimes isn't enought. I know 20d goes upto 3200 with a bit of lose of quality but it's better to have low quality image than nothing.
Also more FPS will be an advantage.


what do you think will be better?
 
It depends on whether its just the increased ISO rating that your after and also what glass you are using at the moment.

20D is an old but good camera. It has a small screen which isn't the be all and end all but a bigger screen does help.
The 20 is also a bulkier body originating from the mag alloy housings.

If it's just a higher ISO output that you want I would suggest a xxxD body, if it's ISO and FPS amongst other higher specs the the xxD bodies are more what you are looking for.

If your glass line up is already good then a 40D is a worthwhile investment.

The 17-85mm is a good lens but suffers from a lot of CA (nothing that can't be fixed in PP though).
 
yes the screen is small. however i wouldnt use any screen for anything other than composure and rough exposure checking, certainly not focus checking (even so on the mk3).

i wouldnt like to use the 20D at ISO3200 either, it gets very noisey. i try not to use it over 800 if possible.
 
I'd rather go for xxD body.
I've just seen 30D for £259
It has better ISO range than 20D
The screen is the same size as my 1000d
Should I get that with 17-85mm
 
Yeah, you say you have £350 + £200, so you should be able to get a 40d no problem in that range. Your alternative would be to go with an older body and some new glass, although if you got a 40d for £350 that'd leave £200 for a decent lens to go with it.
 
there was 40d for 369 on mpb but it seems to be gone
 
might look on ebay.

But the problem with me is that i want it boxed.
 
I have a 20D and I wouldn't advise upgrading to one for high ISO shooting. My advice would be to spend your money on glass.
 
Landscapes, Architecture and Portrait that's what im into.

Im finding 1000d being not upto task sometimes especially when im on the shoot in cathedrals or old churches. Where is often dark. I can get it to work with 1/60s f4 at 800ISO.
Hand holding, I sometimes get it a bit blurred.
 
I'd buy a faster lens and a tripod, I have a 20D and it is not a great high iso performer, although I'd have it in preference to a 1000D on size and handling. How wide do you normally shoot? I found an Olympus OM 28mm f2.8 prime and OM>EOS adapter a decent way of getting wider and faster than my zoom for about £50. You will have to manual focus but its not that hard.
 
I would definitely look into a 17-50 ish sigma, tamron that's f/2.8

Have you tried a nifty fifty on your 1000D for low light performance?
 
Definitely not 17-85mm lens if you are already thinking of high ISOs. Something with f/2.8 should be on your shopping list (canon, tamron or tokina).

20D should be usable up to 1600 ISO with a bit of pp, a bit better than 400d/1000d but no good at 3200 at all. better glass really should take the priority
 
I have acctualy switch from 1000D for 30D. Recived it today and I'm so happy i did it.
 
I don't really understand the negative comments about 20D high ISO. I find 3200 to be perfectly useable after just basic noise reduction.

Here's a 20D test shot at ISO 3200 that I took when comparing the ISO performance of a few of my cameras, no heroic measures were taken in CS5, just basic noise reduction.

I don't know if I'd recommend a 20D though as they're getting a bit old now and shutter life must be coming into question.

Another thing... Although I'm still using mine and I'm quite happy with the results one thing that has struck me recently after using a Panasonic G1 is how useful auto ISO is, and of course the 20D doesn't have it.
 
i switched from a sony a390 to a canon 30d a couple of months ago and i don't regret a minute of it. the sony had a ccd sensor which was proper crap at higher iso's so the canon even at 3200 is a step up for me.

i use a canon 50mm 1.8 and sigma 24-70 2.8 though to try to keep the iso as low as i can if possible

No I haven't yet. I only managed to pick it up from PO and see if everything works. Before I went to work.
I'm definitely taking it for shoot tomorrow.
