From 40D to 1DS markII?

So I'm considering a move to full frame, but wanted to search the collective knowledge banks of this forum for a little advice...or perhaps reassurance.

I'm aware that the 1DS mark II is a couple of years longer in the tooth than my 40D and was therefore wondering if I would find this move leaving me with a less capable (for want of a better word) camera. Of course the 1DS was originally a pro body and so built like a tank, but would the DIGIC III processeing in the 40D be better and is the tiny 1DS screen a nightmare.

I mainly shoot portraits, but my target (4 1/2 year old daughter) moves fast.

Any experiences or input from other members would be gratefully received.
 
I went from a 1000d to a 1d mk2 it was different but you get used to it :)
 
Do not know what price the 1dmkii is but just a quick look on ebay and one on there for just less than £900

so with that in mind would a 5D mkii not be a better buy for around the same money???

I've been offered on at £650, shutter actuations at around 70k. Currently I can't quite stretch to a 5d mark II (unless someone on the classifieds has a moment of madness) as I will also have to replace my general walkabout lens which is only crop compatible.
 
I had 40D before getting 1DsII about 3-4 years ago. It was like changing an old rusty bicycle for a nice BMW. It gets every single shot and IQ is amazing. You just need to allow a month for getting used to different size and interface.

no... 5DII can barely autofocus precisely on static targets (exactly as bad as 40D), and IQ is almost identical to 1DsII despite what marketing literature said

Was this the one at Harrison Cameras? Was in there at the weekend and nearly bought it myself, couldn't quite see myself carrying the beast around so didn't bother....
 
It was indeed. I purchased it yesterday. Has the nice reassurance of a 12 month warranty. Now I just have to wait for it to arrive and sell my crop setup so I can buy some new glass.:)
 
Congratulations, I had one before and loved everything apart from the size.
 
in moved from a 1000d to 1dmk2 and its was a awesome bit of kit, but i found it way to heavy for walking around with (1.565Kgs) so take this into account if you want one the weight really is something, but they are built like tanks and the AF is amazing, for me the practicality made me switch to a 50d, and I'm much happier.
 
Agreed. The weight may stop me taking it everywhere, but I also have an X10 I have with me when the dslr stays at home for those off the cuff shots.

Just waiting on the delivery of the 1ds mark 2 now, and very excited
 
I'd be interested in your first impressions of the camera, particularly weight, handling (button presses) and IQ.

Keep thinking f getting another but an wondering if it's a case of rose tinted spectacles....
 
Specs wise a used 1Ds mk2 looks like just about the best deal going at the moment, I'd guess because a lot of more casual users don't want the bulk which doesn't sound like it would be too much of an issue for you.
 
The Mark 2 versions of the 1D can take a bit of getting used to in terms of managing the buttons and menus. I also use a 40D and 1D3 which have the newer more simple button configuration and whilst I get on fine with 1D2 cameras they can be a bit annoying if you're not using them all the time.
 
Thanks for all the advice and input from everyone. I'm actually still waiting for the delivery. It was apparently dispatched on Monday, but no sign of it yet.

The sooner teleportation deliveries become possible, the better:)
 
It has just arrived and batteries are charging now, though no lens or card with me at work (actually it was an even better deal than I thought as it has 4 batteries with it in total).

First impressions....it's heavy, but in a reassuring, I'm built to last way. Feels very comfortable to hold.

Really looking forward to seeing how it performs
