Front Element Damage on a 70-200L f2.8

Just enquired about the above lens from somewhere and they stated it had some marks on the front element. So i emailed them to ask what the scale of the markings were and got this reply:

"the front element does have two small blemish spots on the front element and a scratch which is about 10mm in front the edge of the element and about 2mm long.

We have tested the lens thoroughly and the marks don't appear to make any difference"

What are your opinions on something like this?
I can always send it back if i get it and it does appear to have problems, but i want honest opinions from yourselves first.

Pros use beat up lenses all the time. I bet it's nothing in comparison to what some journalist togs have!

Most amateurs are very precious about their kit, but it's a hell of a lot more robust than people think. I say, get it. If it's crap, send it back.
 
My only concern is i would have to sell my Tamron to fund the move....then if its crap, i'm stuck.

Guess i could always get a Sigma with the refunded cash.....

ask for images to be sent taken with the lens

Marks on the front element don't normally affect image quality, especially not on telephotos.

The exception is the swirl mark left by incorrect cleaning, which can reduce lens contrast and increase glare.
 
Still, it's a 40% saving over new (give or take a little bit), better than you'll find in most places for second hand.

Seeing as you have the tamron 70-200 2.8 why are you looking for another lens in that range? Is the Canon signifcantly superior? You won't be gaining any extra aperture
 
Its from a well known company

From what i remember reading here, people say that front element marks dont effect the image quality.

I will ask for further details/ images from the lens and of it too
 
I need the fast focusing Rick, the Tamron is a nice lens, but i need lighting AF, something that only Canon can provide IIRC ;)

I'd go for it I reckon but maybe try and negotiate a sale or return - in fact under distance selling regs I think you still have that right.

A new front if it needs one in the future is a pretty cheap fix...
 
Not after exact numbers Grumpy, but do you know what sort of cost we are talking?
 
I'd be surprised if it was more than £100.

The IS unit on my 400DO was only £250 fitted including full service.

Actually, just realised it is an active element so that could be more. The bigger lenses have a plain glass front element that is designed to be easily changed but not the 77mm front ones.
