I have been musing, now the mind has cleared a little . . . :thinking:

I'm torn between options or do nothing? I look at the reviews on the D7000, very limited they are at the moment, I am wondering why this is . . . such a furore before it was released?

One reads and gets the impression the technical aspiration and video of the D7000 are more important . . . its a digital camera for heaven's sake . . . what sort of pictures will it take? Or am I not reading things right . . . :bang:

I have just re read the DCR review of the D90 . . . hind sight and a little more experience (of life:suspect:) . . . and dragging the D5000 out of its bag. Considering my present undemanding requirements, D5000 to D90 is a sideways move, accepting the minor compromises therein.

I have no wish to jump on the latest and greatest band wagon, computers geek style! One is seriously considering the future, in terms of (semi?) retirement in 18 months. More time, therefore a better camera will help? or will it . . . is it simply an indulgence . . .

I get good use and pleasure from my G1 and its standard 14-45mm lens, rarely using the D5000 since acquisition of the G1 which is now my 'compact?' in car camera 24-7 . . . However, this lack of use may also have been because this year has been full of distractions with my health but more seriously, my partners health? Previous to 2010, I used a D80-D90 and then the D5000, required the swivel screen . . . I thought? . . . its not as much use to me as I thought, a fine camera despite that IMHO.

So, I'm getting frustrated, limited D7000 reviews, the ones that I have seen, seem to me to be vague on basics like; 'this is how it is, potential picture quality' . . . 'never mind the quality, feel the width'? . . . my life already :shrug: Equally, one is surprised not to see many posts . . . 'these are pictures from my new D7000'?

Obviously, a picture can be taken with a 'box brownie'. However, whilst I like and applaud 'basic, simple', I appreciate quality and the operation there of. To me, its the 'big engine syndrome' working well within its capacity, smooth and relaxed, never wearing out. One sees a D7000 in this light, never needing changing in my remaining years, perhaps even adding an od quality lens as time goes on????

Off my head . . . talking nonsense, or perhaps its a plan for retirement. I doubt I will have spare money to make any 'whim' type changes, so any money then available will be better invested in glass . . . or put by to pay energy bills? . . . :shrug:

Cliff, just get another D90*, grip and a couple of nice lenses that suit the types of photography you do. The D90 takes AWESOME photos - you don't need all the bells and whistles that the D7000 has to take great shots.

I can't see me replacing my D90 with anything until I can afford / justify going FF.

I agonised D7000 vs D300s, and bought thr D300s in the end. I have concluded that the D90/D300 have reached a point where the IQ is more than good enough for me (and will print up to A2 without noticeable degradation) ISO performance up to 1600 is great so it does all I need.

D7000 is overpriced at the moment, and 16mp just means bigger file sizes, and I have no need for the better video.

Thats the problem mate, its hurting my head as well :bang: . . . D90, D7000, stay as I am . . . I certainly wont be able to change much . . . if anything in 18 months when I tern 65. My problem, I sit and think to much, not enough information, get myself in a stew . . . :shrug:

I suppose the real question is, 'why have we not seen much of the D7000 since its launch'? I can then evaluate it a little more?

Thats a point D300s is cheaper than the D7000 a the moment . . . :whistling: weight might be an issue . . . ?

Thanks Dave, make a lot of sense, very much the essence of the rational side of my mind.

As has been said, I dont need (or want) all the knobs and whistles . . . does my head in with what I have now:thinking:

Pear a camera down to its basics, as when I had a D40X, basically a D80 with out the knobs and whistles. I loved that camera, enjoyed it as much as anything since. Again, small, bought as a backup, it had the 18-70mm Nikon lens on it all the time . . . I think it was the lens that I liked, (I use it all the time now when the 5000 comes out) that lens will be used on which ever way I jump, its so versatile.

In fact thinking back, I never tried the 18-70 on the D90 that I had for such a short time . . . :thinking: I always used the Nikon 18-200VR, which was a very heavy combination as a walk about . . . was not happy . . . I made the wrong call . . . :bang:

I was recently looking to upgrade to a better camera from my D70s.I was looking at the D7000 ,it's spec looked great ,stunning in fact.
This was as people were advertising pre order only.So despite my enthusiasm I had to wait a few weeks and spent the time reading and searching out reviews of the D7000 of those lucky enough to have had one in their hands.I also spent time reviewing the 300 and 300s.
So it was released and available at my local jessops,so down I went. It (to me felt cheap and plastic and far to light and cramped in my hand.I did'nt like the top dials either ,they seemed very Cheap n fiddly.The guy behind the counter suggested I tried the D300s for size in my hands "as after all you have to want to pick it up and use it or it's no good to you" said he . I'm so glad he said this , the feel of the D300s was so much better (for me at least.
Anyway ,my point being ,his words were wise and I'm glad it was him I was dealing with .An older guy not a late teen or early 20's sales person.

I did'nt purchase the D7000 that day .

PS I elected for a D700 with only 500 shots taken .Of Ebay £1300 ,money well spent! A camera that is a camera 1st n foremost and will probably last me another 10+ years.....

Yep thats right!!! I should not have gone that rout. I had not bought the G1 at the time, it came later for Hazel. I have a very dodgy knee and not in my first flush of youth! A flippy floppy screen for low and angled shots seemed like a good idea at the time . . . I have found the LV focus speed distractingly slow and I struggle with the small size viewfinder.

Fine camera, internally, its a 90 to all intents and purposes with compromises. The G1 was for Hazel, she prefers the A60 P&S she already has:shrug: So I started to use it, now I use it 90% of the time . . . I miss my Nikon 18-70 lens. Brain grinds into action, make any changes now whilst I have funds. Hens the dilemmas, I'm even thinking G1 only, LV focus is quick, everything is to hand, point & shoot or manual!!! However, it falls down on moving subjects, birds and the like, living near the sea, and a very short drive from a raptor sanctuary, I like my bird shots . . . ?

When I have a little more time, the full DSLR will come into its own. Hind sight is a wonderful thing, if I new then what I know now. :lol:

Not sure on your budget (not asking either) D700 will not help with the low shots ,but , pick one up.Small view finder? The size of the finder on the D700 is simply AMAZING from DX format camera's.
I owe (in no small part) my purchase to a guy on here Liam from exeter.He was selling a D300s on Ebay.I was looking at buying it , we spoke on the phone at length .He had taken delivery of a D300s and whilst waiting had borrowed a D700 .If I remember right "I was blown away by the size of the view finder size " or words to that effect said he.He had then decided to buy a D700 n was selling the D300s with one shot taken as a test.Someone else looked at and bought his D300s before I could get there.But he got me thinking and you know what ,he was right. So I added a new credit card to my money saved,With 3 months interest free credit f n managed to find my D700 at about £100 more than the cost of a D300s from jessops.
I have to add also ,view finder aside , the quality of the FX or full frame pics is amazing also ......
So , glass raised to Liam who opened my eyes to the D700 and also recomended this site to me !!

Hindsight is indeed a wonderful thing and you could've bought a D3 by now:lol:
I bought the 18-70 used off Ebay for £77 with a UV Filter so i did very well there!

Phil, just a small point, have you tried taking a test shot with and without the UV filter . . . ? It surprised me when I did. I still use a filter but I did a lot of comparison shots, I have a heap of 'old' filters from 20+ years ago!!!!

I'm home today, not feeling so good:( . . . wadding through the various reviews and previews . . . :thinking: Doing the head in. I have looked at D7000, D90, D300s, Canon 60D, Pentax K7.

Not struck with the K7, D300s is the weight of a house! A complete jump ship onto Canon :suspect: . . . price has dropped to £800 at Jessops!! But can I get a lens the equivalent to my 18-70 . . . at the price?
