Fuji s5 Pro questions...

Looks like I've just acquired one coutesy of the classified section, so my quest for increased knowledge on this camera begins!

To start off:

- Can I get a glass screen cover if so where from (dont appear to be on ebay?)
- What batteries does it take? It seems it will only take specific Fuji ones, but the one I have bought has a Nikon grip which I assume takes the Nikon batteries? I already have a D90, I assume the batteries are not interchangeable?
- Will Adobe camera raw read the Fuji raw file format?
- Can I connect the camera directly to a PC to save removing the CF card?
- Is it possible to shoot tethered without additional software?

Any other information current owners would like to pass on would be appreciated, looking forward to getting this camera, its a bit different from the norm and will supplement my D90 and D60 for portrait stuff!!!

Look for D200 glass screens which you can buy off ebay
You can connect a D200 so I would be surprised if you cannot do the same with the fuji
No you cannot shoot tethered without extra software.
 
In order:

1- Yes. You're looking for a BM-6, the same as on the Nikon D200. Beware EBay though, the one I bought after smashing my original one to bits (DOH!) was a tawdry and near-useless knockoff. The authentic Nikon part is worth the extra money. (The cheap EBay one scratched up and clouded very easily)

2- It takes Fuji NP-150's which are now increasingly hard to get hold of (As original parts). The clone batteries may become the only choice soon, as I am not sure of Fuji's stance on continued manufacture.

3- Yes. Adobe reads the RAW files, but does a poor job of it compared to the in camera JPGs, Capture One v5 and the Fuji Tools (Which are so dreadful in terms of ergonomics I advise against them.) Shoot for a while in RAW+JPG mode to see what I mean about Lightroom not doing quite as well as the camera...

4- Yes. It connects as a USB2 reader.

5- No (*). Sadly you must use Fuji's wretched software to work tethered as the more modern MTP tethering standard is not available. *I would LOVE to be corrected on this issue, if anyone knows to the contrary, please get in touch.

Make sure you use the DR in "AUTO", but watch out if shooting white-background stuff as it'll kick your ass and you won't be able to get a blown-out background (The highlight recovery really is that good...)

Shoot RAW+JPG for a while. The camera does a much better job of making JPGs from the RAW data than Lightroom. Take a series of headshots and compare the JPGs with the RAWs in Lightroom / ACR, you'll see what I mean right away.

The S5 needs good lenses. Put a 24-70/2.8 Nikon on it and it's sharp as hell and will run rings around higher megapixel cameras. Put dodgy kit lenses on, and you're going to end up with softish results.

People say it's a slow camera. I say they shoot too fast. The AF is the same as a D200, it's just the framerate and UI that's slow.

The cheap Ebay battery grips are decent. They allow you to use AA cells if you can't find NP-150's or NP-150 clones.

If you wanna know anything else, just ask. I've had my S5 for years and still haven't found a suitable replacement.
 
Thanks guys, just ordered a 4gb cf card for starters, and will see how we get on. My 50mm 1.8 Nikkor is destined to spend a lot of time on this body........

I think you will find yourself using the Fuji much more than your D90 once you get used to the settings...there a smashing camera
 
The fuji batteries fit the D200 grip just fine.
