Fuji vs Nikon

Looking for a decent compact style camera for everyday photos.

I fancy a Fuji x100s, but i gotta wait for that in the future.

So for now i have been looking at the Nikon 1 J1 OR Fuji X20 but i`ve never used any of these, i want the best quality images i can get.
 
X20's are going for about £240-250 second hand or £300 brand new. X100's seem to be about £330-350 from what I have seen. Choice comes down to whether you can make do with a fixed lens or not.

Personally I wouldn't entertain the Nikon although I'm sure many here would.
 
the one series only has a few compelling points imo, the ruggeded one, and using the slr lenses

The Fuji X series CSCs, yes. However, I would find the restriction of 3 focal lengths that he X100 allows (once you've forked out for the adaptor and 2 supplementary lenses) too restrictive. The images the X100 gives are fabulous though.

I have a couple of 1 series bodies, the 1AW (waterproof) and a V1. Other than when I'm using the 1AW underwater, I use my F mount lenses on them, usually with either an 18-200 or 70-300 to take advantage of the 2.7x crop factor. I far prefer the images from the Fuji CSCs though but the longest lens I have for them is a 55-200 and they're only 1.5x crops. The Fujis handle better as well IMO.
 
You can pick up a Fuji X10 even cheaper. The IQ is superb, full manual control. The X20 has a view more features but the IQ is the same. The quality of the images outsmarts my old Nikon D7000.

That's just not true. The X10 is a fine little camera, but it is nowhere near the IQ of a D7000 and half decent lens.
 
Fuji X10 is a cracking little thing, the lens is a belter and a real bargain now too. My annoyance with mine is the viewfinder, something that appears to be a lot better in the X20 so if you want to use the VF I'd perhaps stump up more for the X20. I'm not convinced it's as good a quality of a DSLR but it certainly is very good, my parents have plenty of shots blown up from mine up in their house :lol: Even though I've technically replaced it with an EOS M i'm still loathed to sell it :lol:

In what way is it superior? Worse low light performance, worse sharpness, worse detail by an absolute mile, worse dynamic range. It has slightly different jpeg colours, but not better. In no way is the IQ better and that is no slur. The sensor is tiny and hardly likely to compare.

BTW, I owned both cameras and shot plenty of pro shoots with the D7K.
 
Ok fair one but real-world subjects that I have photographed have faired better. I have photographed a favourite location twice with both cameras. It was just a normal shoot, not even a test. The X10 image was better. One of us may have had a duff camera ! Anyway as long as your happy with your results that's the main thing.
 
It is true that there is a large following of Fuji users who love the quality and look of shots taken with the XF1 the X10 and the X20.
I find my X20 far better in nearly every way to my X10. and the lack of filter gives images close to the detail possible with the much larger Nikon ! sensor.
The speed of focus is class leading with the Hybrid on-sensor focussing of the X20. The control positions and handling are superb.
Technically the larger Nikon sensor should win hands down... It does not.

The menu system on the Sony rx100 and the lack of useful selectable buttons makes the handling unusable for me. However the quality of the sensor is undeniable.
I feel totally out of control when using my daughters. It is like having most of your fingers cut off. The menu system is just a hurdle too far.

It's got APS-C sized sensor and a very sharp prime lens. It's not as restrictive as you thought, the focal length is about the same as smart phone camera, so considering millions of people are happy with smartphone snapes, you gain more creative control with this hugely capable camera.

I would agree, its a cracking camera, I spent a year with mine using nothing else, and produced a wide range of pictures

It's acrtually very liberrating using something with just a fixed focal length range, and I found that my photography improved no end. I now have an X-E1 and X-2 and enjoy using them, but I'm not sure that I enjoy using them as much as I did when I used only the X100. I think I'll dig it out and use it again for a bit.

I was really impressed by the quality of my X10, I then went on to buy the X-Pro 1and later the X-T1. The IQ quality, resolution and definition is exceptional. When you compare the quality of an X-T1 to the Full Frame Nikon DF the image quality very similar up to about 1200-1600 ISO then the DF takes over in performance. In fact I shot my first wedding with the X-T1 and Xpro1 on Saturday.
