Am I missing something?

Cameras are the ultimate lesson in buy cheap buy twice. But, in the case of the X-E1 vs X-Pro1 I can't see anything but a much better deal. No optical finder but the EVF is much higher resolution. Is that it? Is there a catch somewhere?

I think the X-E1 is a nicer body, it's neater, smaller. The VF with these types is only for basic composing yeah? Most people will probably use the LCD - that's where the Pro1 excels, it has a much better LCD screen.

I didn't say I would ;) I said most people ... have you not seen them about? I mean ?????

You have seen lots of people with X-Pros using the LCD?

You must live in X-Pro land as I have never seen one in the flesh being used by anyone :)

A lot of people use the LCD on their CSCs and the like because that is all they have. With the option of a nice viewfinder I can't see why anyone wouldn't use one.

I could seriously almost live with no LCD whatsoever on my X100.

It is not really v2 though is it. It has been made to a lower level (LCD, no OVF amongst other things)

Kindle v2 doesn't have a keyboard ;)

It's a cut down camera with all the stuff you need (sensor and x-mount) minus some of the stuff you may want (OVF etc). It costs less money. I guess it's down to the individual purchaser to decide if they want the "want" list enough to pay for it.

ETA: I know the Kindle v2 is actually v6 or something but it didn't fit my analogy....

The only thing I ever use an LCD screen for is to check for clipping. That bit doesn't concern me.

I was generalising, I see many people with compacts and these new ... er, bigger compacts? - they could be any make or model, but most of them use the LCD, yes. I have zero reason to lie ... :nono:

I can't love back screen shooting. I bought a GF1 but after a very brief honeymoon period I had to admit to myself that I didn't really like it. I personally can't imagine buying a Fuji and using the back screen but as you say... some will.

I can't see many people using the LCD when there is a viewfinder there. Fuji couldn't really make the LCD as good or better than the XPro, it wouldn't have gone down well with XPro owners.

I can see a lot of X10 users , say, using the LCD. As the VF doesn't show focus or zoom and when the lens is extended it covers half the view! Bit of a boo-boo that on fuji's part.

Par for the course though, if you used similar type cameras in the days of film.

When I was a kid I used nothing but those old fuji/Agfa/kodak p&s film cameras. No flash, no settings really, just a click button and away you go. I did used to wonder why my framing was off a lot. I just didn't know anything about cameras back then, but photography still fascinated me. I'm 37 this year btw, no spring chicken, I do remember the film days ;)

correction on the above, the X10 VF does show zoom, but not focus. Just looked that up.

And all those people are using compacts with a viewfinder?

My point is, if they don't have a viewfinder they don't have much option but to use the LCD. Put a very decent viewfinder on and you may see people using that. But as you admit you were generalising it is irrelevant anyway as has no basis whatsoever :)

I'd take the X-E1 any day if only for the lower weight more streamlined design. I think the OVF though cool is not worth the extra weight and/or cash outlay.

Yeah, so why keep dragging it out eh? It's like you're majorly concerned for those people who may be using the LCD!!! :D

But yeah, I've seen some in Dublin City with what clearly looked like compacts with VFs using the LCD. Tourists ...

One thing that I'm disappointed with is my G1's EVF performance in very low light. Basically it just goes black and will not show things that are clearly visible by eye, it also acts like a torch shining directly into my eye and destroys night vision and is literally a pain to use. In good and even low light it's better than my 5D's OVF and it's only really night time shooting that lets it down.

If I can't find an EVF with higher DR that doesn't shine a light in my eye the XPro 1 with its choice of EFV and OVF could be a much better choice as I could use the EVF 99% of the time and revert to the OVF for night time shooting.

ernesto: Don't lose sleep over it ;) I'll generalise all I want, cheers.

The only generalisation really, was they were using some compact or other. Not specifically fuji. Rest was fact, I'll take pics of them taking pics next time. Because I'll remember the overly pedantic nature of some on here. Now get back on topic, oh, wait, you only came in to be pedantic in the first place! :p

The topic is solely about X-Pro1 and XE-1 models. Noticing the usage profiles of people using 'some compact or other' has absolutely nothing to do with users of X-Pro or XE-1 and any differences they may find with LCD size and quality. You took it off topic with your wild generalisations that didn't even include X-Pro users :)

The fact remains that the XE-1 has a different viewfinder setup and this may or may not factor into the choice between them.

I find having a switchable EVF/OVF a great feature on my X100. I use OVF 95% of the time but the EVF is good to see how image is actually going to come out and the immediate effects of changes to exposure without needing to take a shot to see. So for me, I would prefer the X-Pro1 based on that/

I'm thinking half your posts on here are just nit-picking other's. Whatever you're into eh. If I say I've seen others use the LCD to frame on these compacts, it's none of your business, to be Frank.

What I initially meant was I wouldn't be surprised if people bought them and did that - just like the ones I see do it all the time. I would bet some of them are fuji models. I really shouldn't have to over explain to some random nit-picker, but there you go, you're insistent for the sake of upping your post count me thinks.

Well, I have to say I don't think I've actually seen an X-pro1 in the flesh, though if you're reading this Santa.... I would be amazed though if people are buying a camera like the Xpro1 and using it like a point and shoot. They cost getting on for two grand with a lens which in my book puts them firmly in the serious photographer bracket. I can'y see a wealthy newbie going for one as they have no proper auto mode to speak of.

When I bought my X100, as well as the funky looks, the viewfinder was a big part of the appeal and is used for nearly every shot. I thought that I'd use the optical viewfinder more than I do though. I find the EVF so good that I very rarely bother with the optical one.

horses for courses, innit?

For some people the lack of OVF would be a deal breaker with the XE-1. Not for me (been living fairly well with a Pana G2 for 18 months) but I've read enough comments from people who swear they couldn't live without it.

You get an all-magnesium body on the XPro-1, while the XE-1 also features plastic in its body construction. But then you get a built-in diopter adjustment on the XE-1, which makes it much more attractive to me as a spectacles wearer.

XE-1 vs XPro-2 will be a more interesting battle. :)

Monty Don uses one for snaps of his garden on Gardener's World. Therefore, they are cool ;)

BTW, do we all know about this?

Buy one get one free on X-Pro 1 lenses. Now things start to get interesting....

And yes, the X-Pro 2 will be awesome.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people use the LCD to compose shots either but let's remeber you made the comment that most people buying an X-Pro or XE-1 would not be using the viewfinder.

What people do on other compacts (with or without a viewfinder (good or bad)) is irrelevant and in no ways backs up your comment.

These camaras are more in the realm of serious cameras and the viewfinder is a key feature for that market.

Now, what is my post count...

Holy thread resurrection I know....

But FWIW, I owned both X-E1 & X-P1 at the same time. I kept the pro. Why?

The build quality is better
The OVF is a good tool (& the XP1's USP) that I use
The tonal curves of the colour pallet is better (your preference may vary)
The camera has a better grip & better ergonomics
The Xp1 enables closer focusing with the same lenses
Using a combination of OVF/EVF gives one a far better batt life over the XE1
The XP1 is a fraction faster in operation
