Hello there, just wondered if anyone has gone from a Nikon D7000 (or similar!) to a Fuji X-E2? Any comparisons or thoughts on IQ differences and noise levels? I changed to my D7000 earlier this year and although i like it, i've never really fell in love with it so, would an X-E2 be a nice replacement? I was looking at the XA/XM but i think i would like a viewfinder so they're not really an option atm.

I like to shoot portraiture and random things and make use of shallow DOF so i think this would suffice? I've also just started to get into street stuff a little more so this could be better for that too although i do tend to use my XF1 for that, so maybe not? I have shot motorsport before and enjoy it, but it's hardly a deal breaker if i don't so i'm not too worried about any issues surrounding slow AF-C etc.

Any thoughts or opinions?

18-105mm
35mm f1.8
70-300 Tamron VC

I had similiar kit, D7000, Tamron 70-300VC, Nikon 28-85, Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and Nifty Fifty f1.8.

I changed to the Xpro-1 due to disabilities for the lightness and to be honest I have found the colours more pleasing to my eye than Nikon, and with the lenses they are far sharper than the lenses I had with Nikon. You can easily shot at ISO 6400. As for motorsport lenses I had the 55-200mm and I managed to catch some BIF. On the XP1 thread I think UKASEW uses this lens for motorsport and he has captured some great shots. I have had the 16-50, 18, 35, 60, 50-230 & 55-200 lenses and they have all been fantastic, even the cheap zooms, I don't think Fuji make a bad lens.

I bought the zooms due to my disabilities for the OIS but I cant seem to get on with the EVF, I feel as if my eye takes an age to recover. I am now in the process of going back to primes to use the OVF and I will probably buy a Bridge for the longer stuff.

There's another thread on here where it's being asked which Fuji to purchase, XE-1 & 2 or XP1. If I remeber, ianmarsh? has had all three and he couldn't distinguish much between the three cameras. I had the XE-1 and I found it a tad too small for my large hands.

So in summary, I feel the Fuji system is better than the kit you have now. On the Xpro-1 thread, a far few have ditched there FF cameras and gone with the Fuji's, so I dont think you will be dissapointed. It's worth reading the XP1 thread.

Edit: I have taken the XP1 and 35mm to the football with me and it's jacket pocketable, the XE's are slightly smaller so should be great for street.

Hi Jack, I've been watching the other threads closely and just need a bit of a push to sell it all. Having trawled flickr for xe1/xe2 images I can see what you're talking about with regards to colour etc. How did you find the noise levels? From looking on Flickr the Fuji systems seem to handle noise better than the D7000 which I have never really been happy with in this regard. Am I just being picky?
 
I didn't find the D7000 too bad for noise, but, it's not something I paid much attention too, as the Nikon had the in built flash, where as the XP1 doesn't. I haven't shot a lot of low light, but there is one instance when I used the Fuji with the 35mm for a night game against Napoli and the outside shots in my opinion were outstanding, with little light in the car park and around the stadium. My XP1 handles noise with no problems. You won't be dissapointed

Also, I find the Fuji system much more user friendly than the Nikon. As I am new to photography I find it easier to learn with the Fuji as regards to the effect upping ISO, shutter speeds etc, just press the Q menu button and away to go.

Simon, I'm suitably impressed. Would the x-e2 produce similar images? I'm really impressed with the shot of the blackbird took with the 50-230 lens.
 
I am a bit greedy got an XE-2 XP-1 and the XT-1 love them all great cameras, can't really fault any of them, really suit me, had to give up FF Nikon kit because just couldn't carry the weight around anymore, and the Fuji sensor seem to me to give the best IQ at high ISO.

Not that I can see, the XE-2 & the XT-1 does have the upgraded sensor over the X1-pro,which I believe is a bit better at high ISO :)
 
The kit lens is great, well worth getting,i think Fuji are doing an free 55-200mm lens with the XE-2 and the 18-55mm,might be worth looking into if you were planning to add that lens :)

"I had the XE2, XE1 and XPro1 at the same time briefly. I'd bought the XE2 figuring I'd keep that and sell one of the others but in the end I sold the XE2 as it didn't offer enough of an upgrade yet was quite expensive still. I think the XPro1 is a bargain at current prices around £400 but if you don't need the optical viewfinder and/or prefer a smaller body the XE1 is good value at 270ish (I'm quoting MPB prices so you may get cheaper elsewhere). The faster AF on the XE2 was not apparent to me but then I am quite a deliberate shooter. I liked the +/- 3 stops of exposure adjustment on the XE2. Photos from all three were indistinguishable so any sensor changes were tiny too.

18mm is a fine lens that gets a bad press for some reason. The 35mm is fab. I like the 18-55 zoom but also prefer primes so have just sold mine."

The X-E2 with the very latest firmware update, has a far faster EVF than the X-E1, so if a viewfinder is important then IMO the X-E2 is much better than an X-E1. I have both so can compare (the AF is faster too).

The X-E2 with 18-55 is just over £1050 now with several retailers, but check they are on the Fuji promotion scheme before using them. A list of authorised retailers is available on the Fuji website http://free-xe2-lens.co.uk/retailers.pdf This means that its a good deal with the free zoom as well has having supported a UK retailer and got a UK product were handling warranty will be easier!!!!

That said the X-E1 is astonishing value at the moment, especially on the WEX 27mm deal, which makes it pocketable to boot (though not as pocketable as an XF-1!!!)
 
The 18 and 27 consistently get the worst reviews in the Fuji lens lineup, I've owned both (but sold the 18mm on still shrinkwrapped, it s was a free lens deal, as I knew I was getting the 14mm and already had the 18-55), but also have a 27mm. Though it gets slated I like it, and it makes the X-E1/2 pocketable which can't be a bad thing, though like you I have an XF-1 as well (my Fuji addiction is bad, with an X100, Instax 90 and a MX2900 (one their early forays into digital cameras).

subscribed to watch with interest...I have a d7000 like you, David, and a 35mm, 17-50, 70-300 and am getting fed up with lugging everything around as its back breaking.

my concern is an ex2's ability for something like motorsport
 
Actually most of them are with the X-E1, the Starbucks one was with the X-E2. Generally the 14mm is on my X-E2 and the 27mm on the X-E1, I know, choices, choices!!!

The 35mm f1.4 is very nice, but it's quite big (well in relation to the 27mm). Obviously at f1.4 its capable of very shallow DOF. If its a free lens choice, then I would take the 35mm as it's a more expensive lens than the 18 or 27. But of course man maths can always introduce interesting options!! eg Buy XE-2 Body only, claim free 35mm, buy XE-1 from WEX with 16-50 and 27 and sell XE-1 body for £250, end up with XE-2, 35mm, 27mm and 16-50 (not as good as 18-55 but still good) for around £1000!!!! It's great being a man!!!

Hello you.... although I like to photograph motorsport it's not one of my main interests as I probably visit 2-3 a year so it's not really a concern and I'm pretty sure I'd be able to get a few anyway as I don't track cars with AF-C anyway as I use single point AF-S and take 1 shot at the end of the pan.

Before buying the D7000 it was praised for higher iso levels being good but tbh I've not been particularly impressed with it, maybe I'm just picky or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I can't decide now between the x-e2 and 35mm or the x-e2 18-55 and the 55-200 for £300ish more...
 
There are a few options mentioned in this thread, I think you need to go and try the cameras at your local store, if they have them.

You need to decide where your initial priorities are in the setup. Is it portrait work, street or motosport, etc, as this will give you better understanding of what lens are needed. I had this problem when I was looking to purchase my XP1, I was trying to cover all bases with a limited budget, unless of course you have an open budget.

If portrait and motorsport are your priority it maybe worth getting the 55-200mm as a free lens as this will give coverage for both subjects. Or you go with the 35mm for general stuff,(it works for me), and also look to purchase the 60mm or If your flush the 56mm for just portrait. As Mr Perceptive has mentioned the 27mm makes it more pocketable, along with the 18mm as their pancake type lenses. If the XE1 deal @ £429.00 with 27mm continues I will purchase this, just for the lens and sell body. I had the 18mm which I sold as it was too wide for me, but I bought the 16-50 just to give me some covearge at the wide end. The 18mm was a nice lens, but I didnt think I would get much use out of it.

Also, if you go for the 55-200mm as free lens with the XE-2 and it's not suitable you would sell it for £400.00 plus, I sold mine for £440.00. This money could then be used to buy some primes.

Decisions decisions, I feel your pain as my head didn't stop spinning when I was wondering which way to go. If your like me I want everything yesterday, but the money doesn't allow it!

In the mean time, you would probably need to put your kit up for sale as I think the offers finish at the end of this month, if your buying UK kit??????

Now Im off to have a play with the XF1, I had to buy the Red as they only had that colour in stock, my local Cuury's had 5 of them. Also, they had small Manfrotto cases for them (Nano 1) which were only £1.97.

I like wider shots and the thought of it becoming a smaller kot sounds good, BUT the 35 1.4 looks and sounds awesome. I do like the 35mm focal length on crop.

I'm not too fussed on motorsport like I said. For how often I go to watch it then I'm not worried about it not being the best system available. I'd still get a few shots I'm sure but a longer lens would be nice for a bit of wildlife etc. Again, my priorities are mainly shallow dof pics of random stuff, portraits and street stuff so some sort of a kit lens and a prime would be my pick I think.

Go for it, the 35mm is a fantastic lens.

Depending on budget, you could always go for manual lenses and a cheap adapter for the time being. Due to my disabilities I have still managed to get some good shots with manual lenses and there's some bargains to be had. A couple of reasons why I sold my 55-200, was due to the EVF and not enough reach for me, so I then purchased the 55-230 for the extra reach and to try and get some of the small birds that frequent our garden as we back onto woodland. I still found this a little short.

I sold my M42 manual lenses around the same time as the 50-230, but this week I have bought a Vivitar 100-300mm constant F5 and I have managed again to get some excellent shots considering the lens is too heavy for me, so I will need to buy a tripod. As I am home allday I can set the tripod up and leave. It's a cheap option, I paid £14.00 for this lens and £10.00 for the adapter. Just chucking the idea in while you decide what route to take.
 
Yeah I have a few Carl Zeiss m42's, a 30 2.4, 50 1.8and a 135 f4 I think.

My budget would be about £1100-1200 at a push if things sell for what I would like them to. What would your suggestions be for lenses? I am liking the idea from Mr Perceptive but wonder if the 18-55 would be better in the long run for me?

Buy X-E2 with 18-55 zoom in the UK for £1100, claim free 55-200 zoom, sell zoom for £400, net outlay £700 (so far)

Buy X-E1 with 27mm from WEX for £429, sell X-E1 for £250, cost for 27mm = £179, total outlay so far £879

Buy 35mm f1.4 s/h approx cost £300, total outlay so far £1179 and you have 27mm, 35mm and 18-55mm

Billy Bargain!!!!! (y)

Or buy X-E2 body (£750) and get free 35mm

then Buy X-E1 with 18-55 (£600), claim free 50-230 lens, sell 50-230 (£150) and X-E1 body (£250), total outlay £200

then buy another X-E1 from WEX with 27mm (£429), then sell on X-E1 body (£250), total outlay £179

Total cost for 27mm, 35mm and 18-55mm + X-E2 = £1129 And its all new UK kit!!!

(I bought the X-E1 with 35mm, claimed a free 18mm last November, sold the 18mm, then bought the X-E2 with 18-55, sold the X-E1, bought back the X-E1 a couple of moths later for £50 less than I sold it, then added the 14mm and 27mm on the £300 cash rebate lens deal that expired in March, and now I'm wondering whether to get another X-E2 with 18-55 to sell on just so I can get the free 55-200, there really is no hope...........and I want to convert a body to IR, so do I buy a further X-E1 or get something else, and now Fuji are offering 0% interest free credit, its a spiral slope.........)

Its cheaper on Amazon, £710 at the moment. was £706 yesterday and £699 a few weeks ago.

If it was me doing this again and could get on with the EVF, this is the way I would go with the zooms. You can find out your preferred lens distance and then add the primes as you go along. Mr Perceptive way is good as long as you can afford to have the money out while waiting to sell. I was lucky when I had the XP1 in January, as I had a free Billingham bag, free 60mm macro, plus in February I went for the two lens deal with the, 35 & 50-200mm. After juggling things around my camera owes me less than £200.00.

Watch the Amazon purchases just incase their marketplace sellers, as they aren't on the list of approved sellers for the free lens.

Have a look on the Fuji refurb shop, XE-2 with 18-55 on there for àbout 800 quid. Even better use code PAYPAL12 for extra 10% off
 
With that code it brings it down to £719. A new xe2 on amazon is £710 and you get a free lens. But it won't arrive for 2-3 weeks.

Such a hard decision!!

I'd love the 35mm and the 18mm ( my dream would be the 23mm!) so I'd get either one of those if I went with amazon. Everyone says how good the 18-55 is, but I'm not up sure I'd get on with it..
