Fuji X-Pro 1 in place of 5D2

Every time I look at anything to do with the X-Pro 1 I get a sudden urge to ditch all my SLR gear and go out and get one.

It's so sleek, and nice, and cute.. It's more compact, easier to travel with and more subtle.

What are the downsides, if any, to this camera?

I've read about slow AF and such things, but I have a 5D2 already which apparently has slow AF anyway..

Aperture blades chattering, slow autofocus, not full frame, limited by a few primes, manual focus not good. It looks like when it nails it properly and at high ISO it's a winner though. Might be worth getting an X100 and seeing how you like it.

Chattering completely fixed by latest firmware. Autofocus? It isn't 'slow' per se, it's just not as fast as the newest u4/3 and the pro DSLRs. It's faster than the 5D mk1, I haven't seen comparisons with the mk2. Lens range is small atm, but will be expanded, and the camera is compatible obviously with legacy lenses.

Manual focus is rubbish though with the Fuji X lenses. Pretty much unusable.

But I wouldn't get one, and I'm in love with the x100. If I had a choice between the x-Pro and the 5dmk2 I'd snap up the latter, but that might be because I already have a portable option in the x100 that I'm happy with, at a focal length I'm happy with.
 
I may have to look at the x100 instead.

Am I right in thinking that the x100's equivalent focal length is 35mm?
 
Yup. It's a 23mm f2.

I keep thinking about a X Pro 1 +35mm f1.4. I wonder if the chattering is removed now or if it still does it but quieter? The Fuji site isn't clear on this and neither are user reports I've read. The implications of chatter to wide aperture manual focus and reports of poor manual focus put me off at the moment. If these things could go away with firmware I'd probably get one.

My mate has one and he says it's totally removed. I haven't tried it since the firmware but most other reports I've read tend to suggest that it's gone :).

Looking at things.

I think I may go for the keeping the 5D plus getting an X100.

They look damn nice, too.

You won't regret it. Extremely versatile camera, sharp as a stiletto and the latest firmware has really perked the autofocus up - hardly miss any shots now even in low light. Out of camera jpegs are amazing, if that's the way you shoot:

I'm sure The X-Pro 1 a great camera but look at what you have with the 5D2. Great low-light handling, wonderful IQ and access to the entire range of Canon EF lenses. With the X Pro 1 you have 3 lenses. Yes I'm aware there is more to follow but there just isn't the range. It is smaller and lighter and if these are important considerations then I would take a closer look at the X-Pro 1. The 5D2's AF was one of the aspects addressed in the 5D3 and about time too but having used one for over two years now I don't think it's as slow as is made out at times.

5D2 plus X100 or even X10 might be a good alternative and widen your picture-taking possibilities.

^^^ 5D2 plus X100 :thumbs: Sweet combo.

X-Pro1 is a rather different beast. I certainly wouldn't sell the 5D2 and change to an X-Pro1 without having tried it for a while. If you use lenses outside the X-Pro1's limited range you'll soon hit the buffers. Or want to shoot anything that moves.

There's a good review of the X-Pro1 tested against a few rivals in current edition of Advanced Photographer magazine. I've seen editor Will Cheung's original A3 prints and they're fairly amazing!
 
One good thing about the limited number of X Pro 1 lenses is that they seem to be well chosen lenses. Some other systems have initially had lenses that I have basically no use for but I could imagine owning all three Fuji lenses and thinking that they're the basis of a good system. In fact I may not want any more. I'm disappointed by the use of FBW though.
 
Have you held Fuji? Have you tried it? It felt rather awful in my hands, terrible EVF, and super slow AF (5D is lightning fast in comparison, just not necessarily always spot on). It is never going to replace dSLR like for like, it is entirely different product.

That's good the chattering is gone, but shouldn't be there in the first place. The autofocus seems pretty leisurely which isn't good enough at this price. I was looking for one to go along with the M9, but if it can't autofocus well it's not much use for me. Maybe worth picking up in a year when it has dropped in price though as I do like the images from it and an M mount adapter is tempting.

I think I'm going to go away and try and get a try of the x100, I never really wanted to get rid of the 5D but I felt it could be a necessary evil... the X100 could get rid of this.

Ever since digital came out I've been waiting for a camera which could be a direct replacement for the quality compact 35mm and rangefinder cameras I used to use.

MFT comes close in the form of a GF1+20mm f1.7 but there's no VF unless you use the add on and I never fancied that. The X100 is close but I don't want a 23mm f2 lens as my only lens. The X Pro 1 + 35mm f1.4 is possibly the closest yet to my ideal but reports of slow auto focus, poor manual focus and the display freezing when focusing have so far prevented me from buying. I'd love to try one but I think I'll have to wait some time until my local Jessops has one to play with.

Actually I'm still waiting for a direct replacement for the 35mm SLR I used to use too.
 
X100 - Lovely image quality, nice handling, great hybrid viewfinder. Ruined by pants AF and useless MF*

I was playing around with a friend's OM-D with voigtlander 17 f0.95. Wow....would have that combo over the X100 or X-Pro-1 EVERY time, no matter price difference.

*This is my opinion, your experience may differ :P
 
I've gone for the X100 as a sidekick to my 5D2 and really happy with it do far. Waited for a year for a price fall and firmware fixes for most of the early problems.
