Has anyone found a way of using the flash modes on the x pro without having a fuji flash in the hot shoe.
I wanted to use second curtain flash sync to mix ambient with the oc speedlights but could not as the settings were grayed out.
The camera was not in silent mode so that was not the reason.
Lights triggered faultlessly with the amazingly small flashwave triggers.

I'm guessing no.

Flash Wave triggers have just one central firing contact, and that usually means they'll only pick up the default first curtain x-sync firing signal. With most cameras, the second curtain trigger signal goes out through one of the additional contacts in the hot-shoe.

Edit: why did you need second curtain sync? Forgive me, but the way it works is often misunderstood.

Maybe another trigger will work then, Richard - any suggestions?

Reason for second curtain -I wanted a slowish shutter speed ( maybe 1/20th sec) to use the low ambient (indoor wall lights) for mood, then a quick burst of flash from the speedlights to light the model. The flash at the end of the exposure would have frozen the model's movement, essentially keeping her sharp against the b/g.

Having said that, no other flash modes were available either.

I have to admit to being baffled as to why the only available flash option from fuji with this "pro" camera is to use a hot shoe mounted fuji speedlight, the only thing hot shoe flashes are good for are party snappers and harshly lit, red-eyed subjects!

You need a Fuji-compatible trigger. Not sure how much luck you'll have with that. Suggest search X-Pro1 forums, or contract Fuji. There is probably a workaround, but fiddly and could be expensive, such as an optical slave plugged into the Wave Flash triggers and picking up the second curtain flash from a Fuji gun.

If the model was moving, and the direction of the ambient blur was both important and controllable, then second curtain sync can work very well, but marginal at 1/20sec. On most cameras, second curtain sync doesn't work at all until about 1/25sec (even when enabled) but makes very little difference until much longer speeds like say 1/8sec when there is a signifcant time difference between the two sync moments. But then you hit other problems, such as difficulty in timing the shot. Some other issues too, but probably not relevant here.

Can't help ATM but I'm going to have a fiddle with the flash settings later today.

Most likely it would need a firmware u/g to do this but that's not impossible.

My guess is that Fuji didn't anticipate this camera being greatly used with OCF.
 
Thanks Jonathan. The required settings are there for second curtain sync, etc, but just not available except with a Fuji shoe-mounted flash unit............unless someone has made a trigger that fools the camera into thinking that there is a flash in place:shrug:

Yeah I'm just wondering if I can fool the camera by using a fuji flashgun, setting it up then swapping for a dumb trigger ;)
 
I look forward to your results, the Fuji flashes are too expensive to buy purely on chance, as I rarely, if ever, use a shoe mounted speedlight.

Otherwise maybe one of the other flash triggers, eg PW's, will work. I can confirm that the Flashwave triggers will not work (other than in dumb flash mode), which is unfortunate as they are so small and unobtrusive on the camera.
 
Unfortunately it doesn't work :(

With an EF-20 in place you can select rear sync. But the menu instantly changes if you power off the flash or move it even slightly out of the hotshoe.

Fitting a dumb trigger afterwards does nothing.

I've been told the pinout on the X-Pro 1 is the same as Canon flashes so somebody with a dedicated Canon trigger may be able to help.
