Fuji XE-2/55-200 combination: slow AF or is it me ? - Solved !

I would really appreciate other people's experience of the combination in the subject line. For information, I received my Fuji 55-200 yesterday and set about doing a few test shots. I was quite alarmed that this set up would not AF (within a few seconds) albeit in a dimly lit situation (iso 6400, f4.8, 0.01 seconds) I could not get AF at all even in dim but contrasty situations. Trying again this morning I find that in well lit scenarios AF is good but not exacly snappy. However, the lack of AF is of concern.

So, is this a common observation amongst the Fuji community and am I just expecting too much ?

Hopefully someone else can either reassure me that this is just a characteristic of this body/lens combination or, alternatively, confirm that mine is faulty.

Would very much appreciate opinions.

Have you tried upping the ISO speed ? I have no experience with the camera or combination, just a thought.

Given that both lens and body are new I assume that the latest firmware is onboard. I will though check later. Many thanks for the steer.

Massive thanks for the offer above. I will investigate the firmware situation and if still vexed will pop over to see you at a mutually-convenient time.

Fingers crossed that all will be sorted in firmware though.

I have to say that in almost all other respects I am VERY pleased with my Fuji gear (XE-2, 18-55, 8, 23, 55-200 plus lots of Nikon and Zeiss glass via adapters).

My other niggle is the noise that my 23f1.4 AF motor makes; that is perhaps for another thread.

I received my 55-200mm lens this week and from my first impressions it's not as fast focusing as say my 70-300 was on my old D7000, but I expected this from the XP1 before purchasing. I have just tried lens with the latest firmware and it's quite fast, although, from my little knowledge the XE-2 should be even quicker than XP1???

Due to disabilities I have my ISO on auto @ 200 min and max 6400 and minimum shutter speed of 1/200. Also, I have the corrective AF frame to ON in page 3 of my menu. I don't know if this will be an option on XE-2?

As for noise on your 23mm I am finding the same with the 35mm I bought this week with zoom. Again it seems to be common as per XP1 thread.

Thanks for the input above. My problem is that like many here I have spent 15 years shooting with DSLRs (including Canon 5D3, 1D3, 1Ds2 and 1Ds3, Nikon D7100 and D800e all with top-notch glass) and I am comparing the Fuji experience to them. Maybe that is unfair.

What I would say though is that the XE-2 gives IQ as good or better than any of the aforementioned and that it is an absolute joy to use the Fuji in MF mode.

Fuji have definitely made me enthuse about photography again !

One of the reasons I changed was for the lightness of system, and as you say the IQ is excellent, far better then my D7000. Since I changed, I have slowed down and considered my shots more than when using the D7000, where I was shutter button happy.
For a newbie like myself with the Q menu system you can learn the camera more quickly and adjust settings accordingly.

I have read the XP1 & XE-1 (I returned to small for me) threads a couple of times, there are some good links there for different settings.

Same here,but have stopped trying to compare them anymore its just a matter of adjusting to the cameras you are using :)
 
Thanks to Les above I have upgraded from firmware versions 1.0 (as shipped) to 1.2 on the body and from 1.0 (as shipped) to 1.11 on the lens and the performance is like night versus day !

The combination is still not what I would regard as blazing fast but will AF in scenarios that it DEFINITELY would not do so before the upgrades. Hard to quantify but a huge improvement in AF performance observed.

My experience is very limited but I find the XE2 quite lens dependant in this respect. With the new firmware onboard the AF is always accurate but the low light AF speed is fairly slow with the 55-200 to very fast with the 18-55 and the 23 seems somewhere in the middle. My benchmark would be the Canon 5d3 with say a fast L prime onboard and the 18-55 is that fast, or so it seems.
