Considering picking one of these up as a joint christmas present (that's my excuse for trying to get one anyway ;) ) are they good as a compact walkaround jobby? Like the idea of using it to capture my little girl over christmas etc, especially with the 1.8 at the wide end.

I know there is the owners thread but it's very much aimed at the x10/20 models or ay least what I can make of it.

F1.8 @ 25mm isnt going to be very flattering. At 50mm its F4.2, 60mm is F4.9.

I've just ordered one as an EDC camera. They look great, especially at current prices. Sensor is the same as X10 I think.
 
Well that's what I want one for and saw them in Currys for £150 which I thought was quite good for a camera with alot of manual controls. My Sony a37 is a tiny dslr compared to some but I still don't really want to be getting it out of the bag everytime I see a shot.

Are there any other cameras with similar abilities for a similar price give or take a few quid?

not really seen many. At the original price you're in Sony RX100 territory, which looks ace, but is twice the price. I don't think there's anything at 150 quid that competes at the moment...
I did look at used Olympus PEN cameras but TBH the Fuji at that price is pretty compelling and it's proper small.

Ok thanks. I think I'm going to pick one up anyway. I have read a lot of reviews and looked through the flickr collection from it and I'm sufficiently impressed!

Just to ask, the exif on flickr show some shots down to 6.4mm, is that an error from the exif data or is it affected by having to select macro mode below 50cm focus distance?

I've used nearly all the fuji X cameras including the XF-1. The image quality from the XF-1 is really good, and the camera performance is around the same as the X10 so top marks for both of those. I was a little disappointed with the build quality of the XF - its an all plastic construction - but I bought it when it was still near full price. For £150 then that sounds good to me, it's very light and compact so good for EDC.

The lens itself is 6.4mm - 25.6mm, but including the crop factor of the 2/3" sensor that brings the 35mm equivalent up to 25mm - 100mm. The exif on flickr will show the true focal length, not the equivalent focal length hence showing up as 6.4mm.

I just bought the fuji XQ-1 which I managed to get for £250. Its essentially the XF-1s body (albeit, metal construction) and lens with a motor, and the X20's sensor and AF system. I'm really impressed so far but obviously its £100 more than the XF-1.

Thats a great help. It is compactness that I'm after so I had ruled out the x10. Can't say I've looked at the Olympus though.

£250 is more than I am looking to pay tbh as you stated so I think I'm going to take a punt on the xf. Thanks for the info on the exif, I guess it makes sense. My crop sensor a37 doesn't do it but I guess that is because of the seperate lens being chipped? Or have I just invented that myself? :lol:
 
Don't dither, do it! At £150 it's an absolute bargain. The crop factor is close enough to 4x to make calculation easy and (as pointed out by others) isn't really too relevant in everyday use, if you know that it's effectively 25-100mm, you just zoom from wide to tele and don't worry about the FL!

Having had an X-10 that's been back to Fuji 3 times (once for orbs [which have never bothered the XF-1] and twice for lens problems), I have no worries about the build quality of the XF (which feels good and solid to me) which has performed flawlessly for me for over a year now.

Looks good too! The leatherette case is a good bit of kit too, well fitted and still leaves the thing pocketable.

Hi Nod. Do you use it alot? I've just been for a feel (oo'er) and came out without it. They have plenty in so there is no rush. A little hard to get a real feel for them as there is a massive wire attatched. Lol. The screen felt (looked) very good indeed, very fast to follow movement and the shot looked good too. A few quirky things on it which seemed good.

Put it this way, I have a couple of FF DSLRs as well as a Dx one, a pair of 1 Series Nikons, a Fuji bridge, an X-20 and a few other cameras as well as the XF-1 and if I was only allowed to keep one of them, it would be the XF. I would miss the others but the XF is so easy to slip into a pocket and gives such good results that I could forgive the few shortcoming it has. If it had longer reach as well as a wider short end and was waterproof, it would be perfect. If they gave it an OVF (or even an EVF!) Have to admit that I'm slightly tempted to get another to keep in the car (completely coincidentally, I drive a Jaguar XF [when I'm allowed to drive!])
 
Put it this way, I exchanged the tan case I bought to match the camera for a black one that matches the car interior... :rolleyes:

Isn't it all aluminium? I think it was very well built.
Got mine from Currys yesterday. The high speed 200fps movie setting is great fun......

I bought one from Fuji refurb a month ago & I find it an excellent addition to my 7D kit. I tend to take it into London on business with me for any "photo opportunities" , something that I just couldn't do with the 7D (weight / size / security)

There is no way I could have had my 7D with me for this shot ....

I really wish you could set the thumbwheel and rear wheel to control different things like aperture/shutter/focus. Seems like the sort of thing that could easily be done with a firmware update.
 
In manual mode you can control aperture and shutter with the thumb wheel and rear wheel, you can also configure the Fn button and the E-Fn button settings in the menu to give you all sorts of parameters.
The thing I miss with the XF1 is that the Q button is missing. It's handy on my other cameras to change settings quickly.

Maybe we should have a separate XF1 thread, after all, it is a camera aimed at a different market and deserves its own slot

A separate thread was mooted a while back but it was decided that since the baby Xs are all so similar, a single thread was enough. Back then, I think I was the only XF user here, there are a few more now! Might be a bit late to start converting people, it seems top be coming to the end of its lifespan, especially if they're being knocked out so cheap at Currys/PCW!
 
You can't set aperture with one wheel and shutter with the other though, can you? They both always do the same, I thought?

In manual mode one is shutter & the other aperture, you can swap the action by pressing the thumb wheel
 
Is that definitely the case? The x20 does that but I didn't think the xf1 did? Only played with it for a bit though, will find out
properly on Xmas day!
 
It looks like Curry's have dropped the price of the XF-1 to £129.99 today :) Getting harder to resist...
 
BASTARDS! Ordered mine a day or 2 ago. Might have to return it and get a cheap one instore.
