Fujifilm x10 or x100 dilemma

Hi, everyone, I haven't posted here in a while so first of all a big hello :)

I've got a bit of a dilemma, after months of lusting over a fujifilm x100 I know have the funds to buy one and more importantly clearance from the fun prevention officer (wife).

I've seen the ltd edition version on offer for around £730-740 and am very tempted, however I've since been looking at the fujifilm x10.

Two very different cameras I know but I'm now in a quandary !

I have my d90 which I intend to keep but fancied a smaller pocketable camera, do I go with the x100 and its fixed lens or have the zoom of the x10 ?
The thing that puts me off the x10 is the viewfinder having no markings or info whatsoever and the x100 I hear has focus issues with moving subjects ?

Can anyone give me a reason or reasons to buy or not to buy either camera?

Thanks in advance

I have owned both. If you use a viewfinder most of the time then that alone puts the
X100 in the lead as it's viewfinder is great. The IQ is also better on the X100 (although teh X10 is very good) and the focusing is much of a muchness between the two.
However if you want a zoom lens then the X100 is out of the question. So is it decent viewfinder or zoom lens, only you can decide.

I do prefer using a viewfinder , I'm not a big fan of composing a shot using the LCD screen.

Does the x100 viewfinder suffice for general use , or is there limitations ?

Thanks

In the original post, pocketability is mentionned. Not long ago, I was after a truly pocketable camera and had the choice down to either the X10 or a Nikon 1 series, with the X10 as favourite due to it being an all-in-one solution (no interchangeable lenses). A visit to my local good retailer allowed me to see which (if either) met my size constraint - it had to fit in my shirt pocket. Unfortunately, neither does, so it was back to square one until they suggested the Fuji XF1 as a fully collapsible lens brother to the X10. At the short end of the 25-100mm (35mm equivalent) zoom, it is a little faster than the X10, being f/1.8 but this tails off rather quickly as the lens is extended. For me, the selling point was that pocketability - it fits the pocket, even in its leather case. Image quality is great, with large, fine JPEGs looking great at A3+ SOOC. For those so inclined, it can shoot in raw as well.

Didn't stop me lusting gently after an X10 as well though! Just waiting for the post system to return to what passes for normal before the seller sends it down to me (I'm pretty sure the cheque will have cleared by now!).

I'm no fan of the rear screen composition etc but the XF's is the best of the type I've used, including the live view option on my D700.

Sorry to introduce another option but it may be of interest!

Nod.

Assuming you mean X10, yes there are many limitations with it's viewfinder. It holds absolutely no information at all (not even focusing) and is simply a piece of glass that matches the field of view of the lens (and not even all of it) and is also small.
The X100 on the other hand is better than a DSLR due to ability to switch between optical and electronic and fully customise each type.

As to Nod's point, the X100 could not be descibed as pocketable and the X10 is a stretch.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and thanks for adding another choice

I'm going into town tomorrow now and having a look at a few cameras, I've got a feeling the x100 will win but , the xf looks very good also

Rightly or wrongly I think the viewfinder has put me of the x10, I may be missing out on a good camera though

As a happy snapper. I wanted an X100 and then got an X10 specifically because i wanted a viewfinder.

Since getting the X10, I've been surprised how little I've used the 'hole' viewfinder, and how much I've used the rear screen composition.

Dilemma over !

Just seen an offer on the Fuji refurb site for x100 ltd edition for £639 including next day delivery, needed code PAYPAL12 to get this price

Thanks for your replies

Look forward to showing off some shots very soon

I've had a X10 for almost a year, and most shots were taken using the rear screen. However, on a trip to the Holy Land, almost all shots were taken with the OVF. Friends without OVFs were clearly struggling. Lack of info in the VF is a right pain, but in bright conditions the X10 rarely fails to focus, so you get by.

Well it arrived yesterday and I can't believe how good it looks and feels !

Wish the rain would stop so I can get out and use it

Fab. You'll love it. Try it indoors. Fast lens, good at high ISO.
I had X10. Got X100 and sold the X10. That was a few months ago...still very happy..

I have both, I use the viewfinder exclusively with the X100, generally the OVF, and the rear screen on the X10. But, on a sunny day with the x10, having a viewfinder is a real bonus.
I can't pick one over the other, so decided to keep them both.
