hi

as mentioned in a previous post,im very intrested in photography and would love to take it up as a hobby . I.E) landscape and animals . i was about to start saving for a 2nd hand DSLR to get me started.

but my parner bought me a suprised gift for xmas.....
he bought me a s1600, which he was told is a bridge camera

will i be able to take some decent pics from this camera, or am i going to just get basic shots like you would get from a point and shoot one?

also what free, decent photoshop to make any pic amendments are out that that are good for me to start off with?

any help is much wanted :D

The S1600 is a good place for you to start, you can certainly learn a lot more about photography and get some good results with that camera. Where it would let you down is if you were wanting to do large wall prints/canvases as it doesn't have the best image quality. It can still produce decent quality prints up to about A3 size though.

It has all the controls that you will need to be able to control your exposure, etc. and will enable you to learn how to photograph better. Then you may decide to put more money into the hobby (make that a lot more :gag: ) in order to get better quality images for large prints, etc.

It has a built in non-removable lens whereas a DSLR has changeable lenses so this will restrict you to the focal lengths that are available with the built in zoom lens, not a massive problem as it has a large range zoom. All in all though it'll get you off to a very good start.

I have a couple of Fuji bridge cameras myself and they are excellent cameras. You have just about the whole zoom length you will ever need and if its like mine will also be excellent at macro work (close-up - insects etc)

These are far better than a point and shoot as you can still use aperture priority etc just like DSLR so giving you loads of scope to be creative. Then in the future when you have outgrown the bridge camera you can think about getting a DSLR. Saying that I still use one of my bridge cameras for macro

I upgraded to an SLR afrom a Fuji point and shoot - I still look back a marvel at the wonderful metering that camera had, far better than both the Nikon cameras I have owned since. I was thinking of buying my niece a 1600 as she is becoming very interested in photography. Looks like a lot of camera for not too much money, I'd be very interested in your views on it when you've had time to get to know it.

Prior to my SLR's, I also owned a couple of Fuji bridge cams of the previous generation, the S5500 and S5800. Loved them, there's so much you can learn from them, I was especially pleased to figure out the basics of shutter and aperture just by messing around. I still regret selling my S5500 on ebay for very little cash, and now having to pour money into SLR gear!

I had a play around with the S1500 (presumably the predecessor to the S1600) and thought it was a great piece of kit, good menus, easy to get to grips with and very decent image quality given the compact sensor.

Enjoy yours!
