Full Auto - Only Using Max Aperture?

Yes
Is there any way to avoid the camera using the max aperture when in full auto mode?
I passed my camera to a friend to get a couple of shots of me and flicked it to full auto so it would be easy for her. Unfortunatly this uses the widest aperture available. Shooting a group of us at F1.4 on a 50mm doesn't give the best results...
With hindsight I should have set it to AV, but is there any way of limiting it in full auto? Using a Canon 500D.

Put it on P. Auto, but you can change settings too!

Use P mode (Programme)

You adjust all setting like iso etc and the camera will auto adjust aperture and shutter. Usually the camera is pretty good at picking the aperture.

I'm quite happy using Program mode, but I wouldn't have wanted an aperture larger than f5-6, so no real way to limit it. It was only for handing it to a friend so it would be easy... :)

What were the full range of settings the camera selected.. the aperture you've said was f/1.8.. but what was the shutter speed and the ISO?

If you had the ISO manually selected too low for the available light, the camera would keep opening the aperture as far as possible to try and get a usable shutter speed. From memory, even auto ISO might not be enough - it's usually restricted to just a short part of the available range that can be manually chosen. You may have been able to gain a stop or two by manually setting the ISO.
