Full Frame...1Ds mkII or 5D mkII?

Hi All,

I've currently got a nice minty 5D mk2 but have been offered an equally minty 1Ds mk2.

I use a 1D mk3 for motorsport so like the feel etc of the 1D series, but also like some of the features of the 5D mk2.

Which would be your preferred Full Frame body and why?

I can't see the advantage of going to the 1Ds. I've got a 1Ds mk3 and a 5D Mk1, the 5D is a lot lighter and has features the 1Ds Mk2 doesn't have. Yes I know what you say about the feel if the 1D series of cameras. The do have a unique feel to them. But having said that I really can't see the advantage a 1Ds mk2 has over a 5D mk2

Depends on what you will use it for.

The 1ds has the pro body, autofocus, better sealing etc. If you shoot out doors a lot maybe worth a swap. Look's a side the 5dmk2 is a better camera

I would be using it for portraits, macro and product photography.

Is the autofocus similar to the 1D mk2n?

I have used the 1dsmk2 in a studio but like a cameras always use in manual modes. It did a good job, technically dont know to much about it.

I think i read that the 1ds has the better focus in a comparison. At the time a used 1ds mk2 was going around £1100 on ebay and the 5d mk2 around £1400 so the 1ds looked a good choice but all comparison sites argued 5d mk2 better. For me sensor cleaner, higher iso, 21 mega pixels, hd video.

I had a similar choice and went or the 1Ds mk2, this was after owning the 1D mk2 alongside a 5D (I got rid of the 5D because I preferred the files from the original 5d). For me the autofocus build, shutter blackout and coverage of AF points was a big enough draw. I don't use video, found 21mp not enough of a jump and prefer the handling of the 1 series, only thing I miss is live view for macro shooting ( and I think you really need an articulated screen to make the most of live view in that situation)...

Off the top of my head

21Mp sensor ( although the 1Ds 16Mp sensor wasn't bad )
Live View
Video mode
Sensor cleaning
Faster processor
Not sure if the Focus isn't faster on the 5DMk2

There may be others, but nothing I can immediately think of.

I've got a 2 and a 3 and the little changes in controls and layouts are forever catching me out when I use both together. With the jump in image quality of the 3 over the 2, I think you'll find the move to even a Ds Mk2 a retrograde one.











But then you already know what a 1 is like compared to the cheep stuff....

If you rarely need ISO above 800 and can handle the old tech then the 1 series is a lush camera. If you rely on your chins screen the 1Ds II is useless as the screen is awful.
