I get the basics with cropped sensors and know that canon are 1.6x but not sure what that really means overall. Anyone know a website that explains it more? :help:

1.6x crop means the sensor is 1.6x smaller diagonally compared with 35mm film frame or "Full frame" / FX cameras.

The implications of this are:
* The sensor area is over 2x smaller
* All lenses appear longer than they really are
* Specially designed lenses (EF-S) are required cover ultra wide angle like 90-120 degrees
* less megapixels, but higher density, less dynamic range, more noise.
* cheaper to manufacture
* may be only a temporary stop gap in the camera market
* if you think about it too much you will soon spend £2k

as far as lens choice goes will the DOF on a 50mm be the same as a ff, just the image is effectively cropped

The DOF on FF will be shallower.

It'll also give a different 'look'.

Yes and no. DOF depends on focusing distance and the focal length of the lens. It doesn't directly depend on the size of the sensor.

So if the object was placed the same distance away from both FX and DX cameras, then DOF would be the say, but the image would have wider angle of view on FX.

If the composition was the same, then FX camera would have shallower DOF. To achieve the same DOF, FX camera lens would have to be stopped down.

Cheers lads, :)

The cambridge link was really helpful!
