Right, I've just ordered a Canon 5D full frame camera and the 24-105mm L lens. Am I right in thinking that 24mm on full frame is equivalent to 15mm on the 1.6 cropped sensor?

Just wondering because I love my Sigma 10-20mm wideangle on my 450D but I can face selling it if I'm getting the equivalent of 15mm at L series quality.

A 24-105mm on a full frame camera is 24-105mm lens, on a cropped sensor the 24-105mm is still 24-105mm lens, but because of the smaller sensor it will frame like a 38.4-168mm lens if you were to equate it back to FF.

So your 10-20mm lens on your cropped body is equivalent to a 16-32mm lens on the full frame camera. So the canon 17-40mm f4 or 16-35mm f2.8 would give you your Ultra Wide angle shots on FF or a fisheye lens.

According to Sigma's naming conventions the 10-20mm lens is a designated DC (Digital Camera) lens so it can only be used on reduced image circle (APS-C) DSLRs, so won't work on a Full Frame (5D, 1Ds) or 1D (1.3x) camera bodies where as the Sigma AF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 HSM EX DG will work on FF.

Dammit. I thought 24mm would be wide on a full-frame. Looks like another £500+ lens for landscapes then.

I thought the Sigma 10-20mm EX would work on the 5D as it says the mount is EF on Amazon.

The Tamron 17-35mm is nice and wide on full frame :)

It is wide, given that a 50mm would equate roughly to a normal view. If you do feel the need to go ultra wide, there are options for less than 500 quid.

I wanted L quality for landscapes though.

I have the Tamron 17-50mm but I suppose that's just EF-S? That's pretty good quality.

The Canon 17-40mm f/4 L won't break the bank (can be had for under £600), is fairly small and light for an L lens, and is as sharp as you'd expect :)

A.

As you've found out, the 10-20 won't fit on the 5D. There's a thread somewhere on Jessops selling off the Sigma 12-24 for £399 - a highly recommended lens.

Not quite so wide but cheaper if you can find one used is the Sigma 15-30. Another great lens.

I suggest you try the 24mm option on FF before you buy another lens, it is plenty wide enuf for 95% of what you want to do normally

Hmmm. Several options there. I will hang on and see if 24mm on full frame is enough for me. I often stitch shots together so it may be fine.

This sounds right to me. I think you may be confused by some of the other posts.

In other words, if you are happy with the field of view you get at 15mm on your crop camera, that's what you will get at 24mm on full frame. Exactly as you have said.

Excellent! I thought I was right and was most displeased at the prospect of having to buy another lens. 15mm on the cropped sensor was wide enough for me.
